JohnMitchell 16 #4 October 9, 2010 I can't remember how many times I got stuck behind those things going up the canyons in Utah to go skiing, doing their best to maybe do 25 mph. Damn, that's still a waste of a fine engine and chassis.

JohnMitchell 16 #6 October 9, 2010 Still, bad body choice, high and draggy. For a really good sleeper, it's nice to have something a little closer to the ground, like a Maverick or a nice Crown Victoria.Still, it is a nice piece of work.
normiss 892 #7 October 9, 2010 You should check their web site. They did some SWEET work to make this Porsche / VW microbus. This thing kicks ass.

lurch 0 #14 October 9, 2010 Now that thing is awesome. Fastest lunchbox in the universe. I think it makes the best sleeper imaginable because of how unlikely it is. With enough power and a good suspension to overcome how high and draggy it is, just makes it all the cooler. What a wonderful toy. -BLive and learn... or die, and teach by example. JerryBaumchen 1,466 #15 October 10, 2010 Hi happy, Back in the late '70's/early '80's there was a guy in SoCal who was offering kits to put a Buick V-6 into VW buses. He had a photo of one doing a wheely in his brochure. As to how slow the stock VW buses, a guy who worked with my brother was going up a local mountain highway & some guy on a bicycle passed him up. He sold the VW when he got home. JerryBaumchen
AggieDave 6 #16 October 11, 2010 Ah, the Race Bus. It was featured in Ultra VW (a UK aircooled VW mag) last year. Its not that they just stuffed a Porsche motor into the bus, but its been widened 4" from front to back. It was built from the ground up to be a complete high performance platform. Its literally a $100k built custom race car. The guy behind the project built the bus to give race tours to people at the top race tracks in Europe. There are videos on Youtube of him blowing the doors off of $500k supercars on those tracks. Now if the Kafer Kup would come back, then we'd see more 1303 built race bugs getting built. At least the now defunct racing series gave birth to the "German Look" VW, which is the style that I'm building my VW around. I can't wait to get my project on the road, the projected completion date is Feb of 2007... The guy is driving the van around the track and the right blinker is going. (In a retirement community, everybody does that, so you notice it. ) Transit van 1 - running 4 Webers. Transit van 2 - 0-60 in 3 seconds. Nice.

The video of the bugs was interesting. A stock bug will have a short hole shot. A short-lived glory. I used to laugh at mustangs with no rear end weight. A bug would jump while the mustangs were still burning. On the video, there was bugs with wheelie bars and a low-10 time.
AggieDave 6 #22 October 11, 2010 Quote..... seems like I remember Paul Newman doing something like that to a VW Bug many years ago. Loved to pass Corvettes on the highway. Paul Newman did it with a Chevy 350 mid-mounted in a cut up Type 1. It was recently restored and was featured in Hot VWs (the US aircooled VW mag) about a year ago. Nice, but nothing like the Race Bus. There are some monster Type 1s (bugs) out on the road with 2500cc stroked out Type IV motors (or 2332 Type 1 motors) pushing near 300hp that flat out shames Mustangs and Corvettes. Its impressive.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
JohnMitchell 16 #23 October 11, 2010 For cheap thrills, I've known guys to shoe horn a mouse or even rat motor into Chevy Vegas. Great power to weight ratio, if you can get it to the ground. One friend even put a 289 + drivetrain into an MGB. Fast as hell.
