first rig

i'm looking to invest in my first rig i have about 50 jumps but have come across a rig that i don't want to pass up its a new jav oddessy with a spectre170 with cypress for only 2000!! but my exit weight is in the 180-190 range so the 170 is not a very well recommended first buy canopy any suggestions?

The price you are mentioning is VERY low for that gear. You may want to do a little investigating. Details?

PD does not recommend the Spectre for student use. For novice jumpers PD suggests a wing load of 0.9 : 1.0 or, in your case at 190 lb. exit, you (as a novice, not a student) would need a Spectre 210. Please, you must try to adhere to these guidelines until your experience catches up to your enthusiasm!

It's not up to me to decide whether or not PD's recommendations for student use of their canopies is too conservative. It is up to me to appreciate the knowledge base they are drawing from, and it is also up to me to pass this on. Too many new jumpers are wearing plaster (or worse) because of the "it should be okay for you" syndrome.

We all need to pay more attention.
