The regional director of the Office of Radiation Protection, Earl Fordham, said Thursday that no contaminated droppings have been found in areas accessible to the public. The Tri-City Herald reported that officials suspect the rabbit sipped some water left from the recent demolition of a Cold War-era building used in the production of nuclear weapons. The rabbit was trapped in the past week and was highly contaminated with radioactive cesium. It was killed and disposed of as radioactive waste. billvon 3,120 #3 November 5, 2010 There are hundreds of acres in Chernobyl right now that are absolutely teeming with wildlife, since there are no people there any more. The sarcophagus they built over the old reactor is leaking like crazy and there are big holes in it - and animals are using it as shelter. I can imagine a lot of them are easy to see at night, too. I can remember visiting the PUREX Facility at Hanford back in the 1980's while doing a groundwater study. There were some settling ponds just outside the processing plant. I remember seeing a deer near all that water and asked about it. The physiology people were said to be tracking wildlife there. The PUREX facility was running 24/7 at that time at the height of the Reagan weapons build up. They were getting the Plutonium for triggers inside that building. I am sure that is far hotter based on the amount of rods that went thru there for 40 years. Basically Hanford will still be radioactive when the Sun expands into a Red Giant. We are leaving behind some interesting archeaological sites for others in the distant future out there in Eastern WashingtonI think the old Submarine Reactor donuts will have them scratching their heads a bit. Over the years I have watched them tow the barges with the reactor sections on them up the Columbia River after they are escorted to the mouth of the river by NAVY warships assigned to guard them from the Bremerton Yard where they decomm the subs.
