Freeflaw 0 #1 November 16, 2010 Spinal cord injury can be divided into two stages. First is the mechanical injury, then comes the death of the neurons which causes surrounding neurons to die as well. It is this cascade reaction that causes a lot of the damage. Polyethylene glycol can protect the injured neurons (the white matter/axon) and restore function, thus stopping the cascade reaction in its tracks. Apparently this holds true for brain injury as well.
