It's sad that the peopleoes were nearly wiped out but they are making a comeback. I'm glad we have vegetarians...leaves more beef for me. What's your beef, Fred? Southern_Man 0 #12 November 29, 2010 Cows-humans are the perfect example of s symbiotic relationship. They are an evolutionary success story thanks to their interrelationship with humans. There are no wild cows (aurochs were the ancestors of modern cows). Without humans to eat them they would become extinct. Of course that is still no reason to keep them in terrible comditions, standing in their own filth, feeding them corn which they are not adapted to eat, and filling them with antibiotics to keep them from getting sick from eating the corn."What if there were no hypothetical questions?" masterrig 1 #13 November 29, 2010 No wild cows? There's all kinds of wild cows out in this country. Some have been rounded-up that haven't been seen in three years! As for standing in their own filth, I've been to several feed-lots and haven't seen what a lot of folks complain about. Sure, in the rainy season it might be different. There are unscrupulous people in any line of work. I've seen what cattle are fed in feed-lots and it's not just corn. Most of the feed is a mix of alfalfa, grains and added minerals. The interesting thing about ruminants is their digestive system. I've seen cattle eat prickly pear cactus, mesquite beans and plastic bags that folks like to toss-out. They're pretty tough critters. The sad part of the meat industry is how some organizations look for the worst conditions in some 'outlaw' plant then twist that to give the impression the whole industry is cruel and in-humane. It's not fair to the honest, hard-working cattle raisers. Chuck
JohnMitchell 16 #14 November 29, 2010 Quote filling them with antibiotics to keep them from getting sick from eating the corn. I think the purpose of the antibiotics is to speed up weight gain, a curious side effect of the drugs. I think it is a bad idea, too. It's a great way to develop superbugs. JohnMitchell 16 #16 November 29, 2010 Although I have many friends who have gone veggie over the years, many have come back to eating all kinds of meat, and felt much better for it. Any physical anthropologist will tell you that humans are built to be omnivores, the old "see food" diet. I like meat. I eat lots of it. I've never seen a sleek cow, or a rotund panther. Hmm, bacon sounds good right now.
