huka551 0 #1 March 27, 2005 I am a new skydiver, just off AFF. I have started to look at gear, but I don't really understand the difference between manufacturers and what an appropriate size canopy is. During AFF I jumped with a 240 main, performance wise, if I tried a 200, would I really notice? Any help would be appreciated. AggieDave 6 #2 March 27, 2005 You really need to talk to your instructors (former instructors) and the S&TA about appropiate gear choices. If you look at the link above this thread, you'll see "Gear Reviews" I'd give that a good start for learning about different containers. Also talk to your local rigger about gear choices as well. We on the internet can't give you a good answer since we don't know you and what your ability is. As a rule, though for a person under 100 jumps, they really should stick to 1:1 wingloading or slightly under a 1:1 wingloading.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." slotperfect 7 #3 March 27, 2005 There are some great articles on buying your first rig here. If you just completed AFF I recommend you continue to jump what you are used to, and ask some of your instructors that you were comfortable with to watch your landings and give you some coaching. When you have their blessing to drop down to a smaller canopy, likely rental gear, seek some specific canopy coaching from experienced canopy pilots on your DZ. If you post a little more about yourself in your profile, like your home DZ, I may be able to point you in the right direction. I can not say enough about how valuable canopy coaching is. Lastly, don't be in a big hurry to buy gear - you're doing the right thing by beginning to gather information, but only buy when you have the knowledge and training to make an informed decision. Best of luck!Arrive Safely John
huka551 0 #4 March 27, 2005 I definatly feel like there is more information (harness sizes, collapseable parts, removable parts, etc.) that I just have no clue about. I am gathering info to and oppinions to try to get a better understanding of different canopies and manufacterers. Muff Brother 3723
huka551 0 #5 March 27, 2005 When the season opens here, I will spend sometime at the DZ buying the rigger a case so he can teach me some stuff Muff Brother 3723
slotperfect 7 #6 March 27, 2005 So just break it down and ask specific questions about specific parts. You will find plenty of help here defining what things are and what they do . . . what we try and steer you to your instructors for is whether or not it's the right gear for your experience level, skill set, DZ elevation, etc. So fire away! huka551 0 #7 March 27, 2005 I have a friend who has like 3000 plus jumps, he's old school static line. He wants me to buy his brother's harness (minus the main) and reserve. I said, how do I even know if it will fit me properly. The price seemed like a good deal, but I know that I am just not ready and there will always be a 'deal'. Thanks for your help John!
