millertime24 8 #1 December 14, 2010 And I'm kind of torn between 2 feelings. It's a retirement slideshow for one of our MSgt's, and it basically is her whole life in the AF with music to sync up the propper feelings to the pics being presented. Where I'm torn is in the fact that Ive invested 17+ hrs of my life making this thing, and I feel I should be compensated. Then on the other hand, Ive just seen this persons entire military life, and after syncing the music to it and watching the final cut, I'm so mooved by the accomplishments of one person (for both herself and our country). I just feel torn. I dont know weather to charge her for all the time Ive invested in this project (to include the use of my editing software/computer usage/time out of my life), or to just be greatfull for all she has done. The inner me is leaning on the latter, but the greedy me is saying "dont do it or else everyone will expect the same thing....for free". I DO NOT envy the guys who have to do this for a job. I really dont even know the purpose of this post other than to ask "should I do this stuff for free or charge for my services" (and I wont for the person I just finished editing).Muff #5048

Damn, that is a good answer. At first I thought pfffft! Until I read the end.I was just going to say go with your heart, it's usually right. I get stuck in the same dilemma a lot. I fix co-workers computers when they have a problem and usually end up telling them to pay it forward since most the time I'm just cleaning viruses/spyware from their computer. JohnnyMarko 1 #5 December 14, 2010 QuoteThanks man. It's what I needed to hear/read. No problem. And try it! It works, 'cause you know when you've had to flip a coin, and its spinning in the air, you're thinking in your head over and over what side you want it to land on. I can understand you not wanting to get roped into doing it over and over again, though. If anyone asks again, you can beg off with "Sorry, that was a lot more work than I thought it would be." I will be giving her the final cut that Ive produced. She served our country with dignity and honor not to mention all the Airman she has helped along the way. IMHO, giving her this is the least I can do to thank her for it (she's been very helpfull to me as well). Looking at all the pics of her personal life that was WELL before my time then listening to the music to those pics.... I can't help but feel that I can accomplish half of what she did. I will add that my other concern is doing this for EVERYONE I even remotely know could proove to be a challengeing thing. And not to really sound like a dick, but my computer cost money. My software cost money. My time has to be worth something (albeit not that much). My problem is that I know where this is heading. My boss will say "A retirement slideshow... I know someone who would be happy to do it.". Anywho, Ill just be satisfied that this one is happy (if not moved emotionally). Guess Im a bit of a push-over when it comes to doing things for people I like.Muff #5048

Beerlight 0 #19 December 15, 2010 QuoteNot sure what you're getting at. Guess I grew up in a different AF than you did. (We) would do something like that totally out of pride and esprit de corps. After serving 23 years on active duty, I can seriously say, I've never heard of anyone EVER asking for fn' compensation for performing such an act. That clear it up? No need to respond to me. Just think of what you'd like when you retire?
millertime24 8 #20 December 15, 2010 QuoteThat clear it up? Not exactly. You had High performance computers back then? Or that YOU YOURSELF had to pay for them? And by "such an act", are you reffereing to this specific example? Make it known, Im NOT asking for compensation in this case. When it comes to me doing the same for people who I dont even REMOTELY know... yeah my time/equipment is worth something. BTW, have YOU personally invested in a bunch of software and time to ever put togeather something that will make the recieving party thankfull... I couldn't think of the amount of time and effort I invested, and not just on a video, cause it was a lot. It's not about that, it's about the experience of it all. Don't get upset at my response.
