TiaDanger 0 #1 December 18, 2010 So far we have almost a foot of snow. The bad part is that this is only day 1 of a 4-day snow storm My front wheel drive Toyota is not going to be happy, and I might have to resort to hooking the dogs up to a dog sled if I'm to go anywhere this weekend Tahoe is apparently projected to get up to 15 feet of snow this weekend! Who else is buried in snow? And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. skycamefalling 0 #3 December 18, 2010 I wish I had snow where I am at. We are stuck with a bunch of rain here and my kids can only look outside. If it were snow, they could go play in it. Either way......sucks Speedracer~I predict that Michael Jackson will rise from the dead. And that a giant radioactive duck will emerge from the ocean and eat Baltimore. jimmytavino 16 #4 December 18, 2010 we've had significant snow On the ground now for over a week.. it's a bit earlier than we'd like..and there are snowbanks EVERYwhere and snow covered roads. maybe 2 feet, over the past 10 days.. It's snows every day.... "lake effect".... While The Great Lakes offer excellent advantages during the summer, ( fishing, sailing, boating, etc. ) once the arctic air from up north of us, starts sliding south , It picks up the moisture from the warmer water, turns it into snow flakes, and DUMPS it on the terrain which is within 20 or 30 miles of the shoreline...there are places 30 miles south of us, that have NO snow on the ground.....just a matter of location... we live with it.... and manage. A front wheel drive car CAN handle snow very well... better than a rear wheel drive.. That has been my experience, anyway... the weight of the engine on the drive wheels seems to help.... drive carefully, allow more stoppping distance, carry a blanket, small snow shovel, nutrition bars, water, flashlight and extra gloves... good luck... jt

In the UK - BUT I love the snow - no complaints from meWe live on a hill and it is pretty common for the neighbourhood to get together to watch the "muppet show" - that is people in cars trying to go out. TiaDanger 0 #13 December 18, 2010 Quote Spoken like someone who never had to drive a rear wheel drive car in winter. I admit, between four wheel, all wheel, front wheel and rear wheel I'm not last place, but I still can't guaruntee I will make it to my destination when the roads haven't been plowed yet! And plus, if I know I'm living in an area with tons of snow, If I had a rear wheel drive, it would not be my only car. People in the Sierras and everywhere else that gets seasonal snow are silly to have a rear wheel drive as their only vehicle. I love the snow, and LOVE to snowboard, but when you get quite a bit of it, it just immobilizes the city...people hitting into each other, roll overs on the interstates...all on the weekend that most procrastinators are doing their Christmas shopping so there's a ton of people slipping down the road. The worst that I remember in recent years was five years ago where I lived. I had just gotten my wisdom teeth taken out two days prior and we went into town to do some shopping. Its snowing like crazy, which put us late getting home, and by then my pain pills had totally worn off. The snow was up to my hips and our drive way is about 1/4 mile long on an incline. After an hour of trying to clear the driveway, we ended up leaving the car on the side of the road and hoofing it back and forth with all the groceries and shopping bags in waist high snow. With my mouth throbbing in pain I remember thinking,'I'll never be more miserable than I am right now!' Ahh, memoriesAnybody else got any snowed in memories? And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. Abedy 0 #14 December 18, 2010 It has been snowing for almost 4 weeks here. We're in the middle of western Europe, more than 500 kms from the Alps and everything is covered in white. At least it hasn't been that freezing cold all time, there were some "warmer" episodes with temps at around the freezing point. The streets are a mess, parking is even worse. Side-walks? Vanished. You call for snow ploughs? Hah! Take your own snow pusher and get your ride free, that's a good warm-up in the morning. In the centre of town? Anyway, budget's tight, so stop moaning! People here have really had it. I'm looking forward to the "between-the-years" holiday on Mallorca. Guess why The sky is not the limit. The ground is. riggerrob 643 #15 December 18, 2010 Agreed! Small, front-wheel drive cars are amongst the best in moderate snow. When I was a teenager - learning how to drive in Quebec - I routinely drove my parent's Honda Civic up hills that had Jeeps spinning. Sure good snow tires helped, but most of my advantage was in technique and most of that technique depended upon a gentle touch on the brake and accelerator pedals. One time, I even drove a - summer tire equipped Honda Civic through the first heavy snow storm of the season, through the Donner Pass, when everyone else was stopping to chain their tires! If roads are so bad that you cannot drive a small, front-wheel drive car, then Jeeps should stay at home.
CanuckInUSA 0 #16 December 18, 2010 QuoteIf roads are so bad that you cannot drive a small, front-wheel drive car, then Jeeps should stay at home. My Jeep has gotten me through tons of snow (and mud) up some pretty steep hills. One of my last years in Colorado we had a huge dump of snow and myself and another guy made it to work (we both drive Wranglers). Another fellow from work emailed us telling us he could not make it into the office because his Jeep got stuck in the snow. Myself and the other Wrangler owner looked at each other and laughed each saying "That's not a Jeep, it's a Cherokee". Of course myself and the other Wrangler owner were fools, we could have had a snow day like everyone else from the office. Instead we foolishly drove our Jeeps in the deep snow to work. What were were thinking? Oh and snow is a daily reality I must deal with from October through to May (sometimes even June). Great stuff when it is in the mountains, but the last thing you want in cities. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Herky 0 #22 December 19, 2010 QuoteI have driven all kinds of vehicles in all types of conditions and you are just fooling yourself with your front wheel drive vehicles, if Jeeps are spinning out those people should not be on the road. My dad used to tell me the only difference 4wd makes is that it's easier to drive out of the ditch afterward. But as long as roads are being plowed, fwd is just as good. Me and my friend drove his pontiac sunfire through 2 miles of un-plowed road that was 14 inches deep and literally being pushed by the bumper. He had blizzaks on it though. At the same time, last year we had a snow storm where I was in a full sized 4x4 truck on a gravel road that had not been touched, about the time we went through the drift that went over the hood I was very happy to be in a truck. The absolute worst vehicle for winter driving though are small rwd pick-ups, like a ford ranger or a chevy s-10. No weight on the rear at all.
skydiver30960 0 #23 December 19, 2010 On topic: I hate the winter. I was raised in Erie, PA and the amount of winter I can survive is formidable. The amount of winter I enjoy is, due to a saturation of winter weather in my childhood, painfully small. I'm in Virginia now and it's still too damn far north. Off topic/on side topic: IMO, 4WD>FWD>RWD in the snow, but I think modern vehicles (regardless of drive configuration) can handle MUCH more winter weather than their drivers can. People just don't want to slow down. At all. Take your time, and drive in a manner the conditions will allow. Problems arise when the conditions don't mesh with the driver's schedule. The driver chooses their schedule over the conditions, and the conditions win all the time. Elvisio "Me likey 4LO" Rodriguez

I agree ... also there is nothing wrong with a RWD vehicle if that RWD vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission. Where the RWD fails on the snowy icy stuff is when it is coupled with an automatic transmission. Of course driving a manual transmission vehicle requires two functioning arms, two functioning legs and a functioning brain between your ears. I will never understand why people want their wheels to be automatically still be driving while the vehicle is in gear (usually all of the time) when one is trying to navigate the snowing and icy stuff.
