How often do you clean your oven? Self cleaning type or otherwise

Recommended Posts

Curious due to I never really thought about this until my oven lit up like a sparkler on Thanksgiving day, but was proven this is a fairly important thing to remember especially right before the holidays when all the appliance parts stores are closed.

Hmmm... I've been in my current apt for 2 1/2 years now and I can't recall if I've cleaned mine (it was brand new when i moved in so it was definitely clean then).

Though I cook a lot, I probably use my oven to cook once a week on average. And I guess most of what I do cook in the oven is pretty self-contained... but I definitely don't want sparklers in my oven!

Self cleaning, when it needs it.

Yeah same here, which is about once a month

Current oven, never. It's a little schizophrenic though, so I try not to use it in general.

Haha... that was a sketchy oven...:D

I cleaned mine once, in 4 years, so I could clear the barracks a couple days ago.

I'll notice it when I pull something out and think, "I need to clean that" and then I won't give it another thought until I take something out of the oven again. That said, I actually just did it yesterday. With everything else, I'm very much a neat freak. I just tend to do most of my cooking on the stove, so I forget about needing to clean the oven.

Mine isn't self cleaning. Don't give me ideas: I'm a female bachelor, I haven't done a thing with my appartment since I got it: I take out the ice of the freezer when I can't get food into it because it's all frozen over, that's it.

I've got fast internet and a big fish tank.

:D

Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet.

Funny, I just attempted to do this yesterday. I have a self-cleaning oven and the minimum cycle time is 3 hours. My oven rarely gets used - but I figured since I was home - I may as well do it. (Plus, the inside glass and right along the edge had some spatter.) I had to shut it off after about an hour and ten minutes... the smell - UGH! Even with the sliding glass door open and the vent running on high I couldn't stand it!

I'd really just rather scrub the damn thing! So, to answer your question... not often enough apparently, and that will not be changing in the future! ;)

I have a 'continuous-clean' oven that never needs cleaning.

They don't make those types of ovens any more so I keep this one even though it looked bad on the outside when I moved into this house 11 years ago.

I agree!...the smell is atrocious, but hand cleaning after going to long is DISGUSTING, like pulling bacon grease from a pan that sat for years!

However, from all these comments I dont feel so bad now. I guess cleaning the doggone thing is like gaining weight, you dont notice it as it goes along then one day you go damn I'm as big as a house!

I'm with Skymama I considered myself a somewhat clean obsessive, but just never really put the oven into that spring cleaning schedule.

My daughter said "momma, thats the color its supposed to be? I thought it was supposed dto be black. I guess every 9 years is a little long ;)
