Nataly 38 #1 December 30, 2010 In light of my New Year's Resolution of learning a new language, I have booked myself into an immersion programme abroad where you get to live with a host family for a couple of weeks and also take language lessons You don't have to, but it's a kind gesture (and in my opinion common sense) to bring a small gift for the family to show your appreciation. Normally, I would think something representing your culture is a nice thing to give, so I could get something Canadian, British, or French.. Not really sure what, though.. There is a huge French influence over there, so maybe the French thing (even though I am presently in France) is maybe not the best idea. I don't have access to maple syrup (!) either, and somehow fish and chips doesn't seem like an exciting gift to receive!!! Some ideas would really be appreciated "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

Nataly 38 #3 December 30, 2010 QuoteNeed more data. What's the language you're learning / ethnic nationality of the family you're staying with? I will be studying Arabic in Morocco (Rabat, the capital). I don't have info about the family yet as I booked only today. I do know that not everyone in the bigger cities is especially traditional, so they may or may not be religious. They may be a large family with kids, parents and grandparents, or just a young (married) couple. So something fairly neutral, but not some crappy junk you just get at the airport..."There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

shah269 0 #6 December 31, 2010 Well here is a dumb one....where you live is there a tourist gift shop? If so stop over and look around. Get something that represents the place where you live.Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. Well, Nice is tourist central, but the majority of the touristy gift-shops sell crap. I thought about offering something that represents France, but considering Morocco only got their independence from the French in 1956, I'm really not sure that would go down very well. Besides, from the last time I went there I know the grocery shops stock everything you can get in France and then some!"There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

Nataly 38 #10 December 31, 2010 No, but anyway he should be working and he isn't based in Rabat. In any case, I just got back from there last week and should be seeing him again in February, so no biggy if I don't see him this time. To be honest I think it will be good for me to spend a few weeks with a host family instead of just staying with Mohamed - it will give me a different perspective on things. And now back to the topic at hand.. I was thinking maybe an Atlas? Would that be a nice thing to get as a gift?? I used to work for L'Oreal, so I could bring a few goodies as well for the hostess.. And probably some sweets for kids (if they have any). Otherwise, still open to suggestions..."There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
