Phoenix???

Recommended Posts

I have a great offer at work to move to our Phoenix office, but I'm not sure if I want to uproot my wife and daughter and move over a thousand miles away. My wife is ok with it, but we'd be really far from all our family and friends here in the midwest.

On top of the job/propomtion, etc. there's the obvious draw of having Eloy as my home DZ B| and there's other great things about Phoenix like being able to swim outside one day and go sking the next, being within reasonable diving distance from Vegas, San Diego, Mexico/ocean, etc... But maybe Phoenix really sucks and I just don't know it.(?)[:/]

Has anyone here moved to Phoenix somewhat recently? Are you glad you did? Is there anything that may have changed your mind about moving had you known it beforehand?

I dont like Phoenix. I was there for about a month last year.
So far this year Ive been there for just about a month, and have right a 10 more days left.

Im from the south and have a few things I like in life, many not found in Phoenix like:
Rain
Green (you know like plants)
Humidity (you know keeps your skin dry)
Grass (see above, oh, and it keeps the dirt off your gear)

I suggest you visit before you commit unless there are other factors that could affect your decision.;)

I moved here from Massachusetts 2.5 years ago.
I came in search of better weather, and a flying career.
I have found all that I was looking for, and as a result I am extremely happy with being out in the desert.

I live in a little town called Arizona City, it is about 10 minutes from the dz in Eloy. I can see canopies from my pool in the backyard! B|

My wife is a realtor here, and the best thing about Phoenix is that there is an abundance of good deals on homes all over the valley. You can get an extremely good deal on a brand new house near Phoenix. You can get a 1700-2000 sq foot house, 4 bedroom 2 bath, garage kind of place BRAND NEW for 200k. The further out from Phoenix, the less the price is. There is ample inventory, so there are discounts all over the place. It is certainly the buyer's market. And I am talking about NICE neighborhoods.

It is fucking hot here in the summer, there is no doubt.
It sucks, dont let people tell you different. Screw all that "dry heat" crap you hear...it is hotter than hell.
But the unbearable part of it lasts for about 3 months, July, August, September... so I look at it like winter back in Mass. Only difference is you hibernate from the sun, not the snow and ice. Ac and a pool is all you need.

It is good out here, come on out and check it out.
If you need any more info, or help with real estate or anything, pm me.

Hey,
I am not saying that AZ city = Phoenix.

Just relating my experience, helping out a brother, ya know?

But to clarify, the housing prices I was talking about refer to Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, parts of Mesa, maricopa.

Life out in the tumbleweeds is far better than life in the city as far as I am concerned.
But maybe that is just me.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Jeff, that's the kind of honest reply I was hoping for. I was thinking about the summers the same way you mentioned, sort of the opposite of midwest winters. It's been colder than... well just fu(kin freezing here in KC lately, so most people have just been sort of hibernating alot. I've been to Moab in June, so I know how hot it get's out there.

I don't know the details of the deal yet so I'm not sure what type of realtor and relocation package my company will give me, but thanks for the offer to help. I'll PM you if I end up taking the offer.

No worries man! :)
As far as the summer being hotter then hell: yes, its hot, but like anything, its manageable. I've rode my bicycle to and from work 2-3 times a week all through last summer (30 miles round trip) in Tucson. Its hot, but you can still do stuff.

there is a lot to see and do in arizona. it get's FUCKING hot for part of the year but that is managable. phx is pretty spread out instead of being stacked up on top of itself so i would say it is a pretty good transition to a metro area. phx is the 5th largest metro in US. prevailiing wage is higher than in the midwest and you have eloy an hour away. if you decide you want to visit i can give you the nickle tour.

Just a big honkin' BUMP to see if there are any fresh opinions out there.

I'm in the same situation as the OP in this three year old post. There are MANY opportunities for flight nurses in the southwest right now. Some of those are in the Phoenix area. I AM worried about making my wife quit her GOOD job to chase a POSSIBLY GOOD job for me. She says she'd follow me anywhere, I'm a very lucky man. I don't want to violate that trust by leading her into a craphole.

I've heard from sources (although interestingly enough I couldn't recall any of them other than one) who think Phoenix sucks. I seem to recall them complaining that it was "too much of a big city feel" with crime and gang activity really taking an upswing in the past few years.

Any new opinions?

Phoenix SUCKS..... but the surrounding areas ROCK .

I live in NE Scottsdale and love it ..

yes, hot in the summer and who the fuck cares if it's a dry heat, you still will be fine with a pool.

hint #1... buy outside the loop (loop 101 that is), it reduces traffic and crime by a shitload.
