How predictable should the graphics for dropzones be?

Obviously there is some imagery that everyone can't get away from, due to the nature of the sport. But does a logo for a DZ really NEED to include a parachute, or a skydiver, or another other elements that directly related to our sport?

Just wondering what the target market thinks, since I'm working on a project and wanted some feedback from the ones that would be seeing logos, posters, and other skydiving related graphics more than others.

Event logos at drop zone FOR up-jumpers can have a much wider range of imagery, but for a noobie? I dunno.

I'm just thinking of what is most easily understood by a student looking for a drop zone.

For instance, you -could- show a D-ring, but really, would a student instantly recognize that for what it was? Even if he did recognize it, is that the message you want to send, "better pull this thingy or you're dead!"

OR do you want to show what most people would consider to be successful outcome of a normal skydive; the relative safety of the open parachute.

Are you making a logo? What program(s) do you use?

I'm just working with paper/pencil/markers right now. I do about 95% of the work on paper, and the 5% using the software just makes it look aesthetically pleasing and presentable for the client.

For logo design, typically Illustrator, Freehand, or Inkscape. Mostly the first two.
