Risers

Recommended Posts

How long should your risers be? Are they custom made with the container or is there a standard size for everyone?

The reason I ask is this weekend I let go of my toggles after performing a function check at 7k, and when I reached back up to get them, they were at the tips of my fingers, which made it difficult to get my hands back in.

Risers are generally sized with the size of the container and harness made by the manufacture. They give you a size that they think will fit you.

However, some folks need shorter or longer risers for their needs. There is a give and take when changing the length of your risers. For instance, shorter risers will give you a shorter toggle stroke, but if your risers are too long you can't reach toggles well or your slider. Not collapsing your slider cause wear on your lines for instance.

Have your rigger take a look at your risers to see how long they are and if he/she thinks you would benifit from having slightly shorter risers.

How old is your Vector II? Are the risers the origal ones?

23 inches was pretty normal for an old rig.

Manufacturers generally make about 21 inch risers and only make shorter/longer ones upon request.

My personal preference for my very tall stature is 18 to 19 inches. If you're wondering I'm a giant at 5'6"

If your rig fits properly, and the leg straps are tight while under canopy, you should be able to touch your slider. If not, chances are you have really long risers. Measure them end to end... not including the ring and let us know how long they are.

Thats a definite, I cant even touch my slider while im in the saddle. I'm definetly going to check out new risers, or im just going to spend 1600.00 on a new container and start building a new rig lol.

You have the long ones.

If the rig is in good condition, order some new risers in the 20 ish inch range and I bet you'll be happy with them

Good luck!

If you get the new risers, please be aware that your flare point will be lower. i.e., to get the same flare, you will have to pull down further. In full flight there is no difference. Since the full flight position for the shorter risers would be lower (by 4 inches if you get 20" risers), the flare point is also lower. Practice flares at altitude and be especially careful for the first jumps. After five or ten jumps you will have gotten used to the change.

Your flare point is still the same distance from the guide ring in the risers. What is different is where your are, you will be 4 inches closer to the canopy. Full flight will be the same because the guide ring will still be 4 inches from the top of the riser. Shorter risers raise you up, they don’t lower the canopy. To flare you will have to move the toggle the same distance as before but you will start and finish at a point lower in relation to your body.
