wayneflorida 0 #3 March 1, 2011 Takes all the fun out of finding chart in bag because ATC just gave you new route in night IFR thru thundersorms with servere turbulence, panel lights out and holding flashlight in mouth.

Anyway, what I think will be interesting is to see what excuse the airlines can come up with for requiring passenger iPads to be stowed for takeoff and landings now.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
PhreeZone 20 #7 March 1, 2011 I'd be happy if they could just let me use a single bin at the TSA line for my laptop and iPad! How many cockpits currently have a USB port or even a 110 outlet for charging in them? I guess I am thinking more towards the GA side getting these once they get general approval. I know I've been sitting in the back a few times this year only to watch my battery drain to nothing over the course of flying for a day due to the lack of charging options in the stupid regional jets.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

jonstark 8 #9 March 1, 2011 What's really funny is the mount that goes into the Gulfstream passenger seat armrest costs $2500!! Hah! There's a pretty bitchin little lap mount for pilots to use. My problem is that I can't hold the screen far enough away to see it without my cheaters on. Actually having up to date charts of anywhere you might need to go is well worth any hassle it may be to use an iPad to see 'em. Geo referencing your little airplane cursor is great for situational awareness too. jon

airtwardo 7 #15 March 2, 2011 My wife is looking forward to getting hers, it's really going to lighten the load. Her flight bag contains both the domestic and international charts as well as the manuals for both 757 & 767's. ALL of which require continuous updating by hand, tedious and time consuming, not to mention the bag must weigh 50 pounds with all those books in it. As the UA~CAL merger continues the distribution will begin for all their pilots as soon as the required 'testing' gets done and some specialized software is finished. PART of the testing that I thought was interesting was the failure possibility during rapid decompression...no doubt there will be a chamber used to simulate the environment, but each and every unit issued will be tested regarding performance, not just one or two for 'type testing' of the hardware. I say just fill up the Vomit Comet' with 10,000 units... take her up and over the hump! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

So can we expect announcements on planes now along the lines of "if any passenger has an ipad charger please notify the crew. Unfortunately we will be in a holding pattern for the next 30 minutes while the captain charges their ipad and figures out where we should be going"Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
