Cypres question

Recommended Posts

Reading the comments in the recent incident in Perris about how the Cypres can be damaged if the control unit is in the yoke, therefore the rig should not be turned upside down to pack the PC.

Well, I have a Vector 3 and the control unit is most definitely located in the yoke. While I have never turned it upside down to pack the PC, I HAVE seen packers do this on occasion.

1. Should I have any concerns about this?

2. If so, what would be a good way to let a packer know that I prefer they not do that to my rig? I have found that they can get bent out of shape if you attempt to correct their technique

3. Can Bill Booth or anyone from RWS comment on the advisability of this with regard to the Vector 3? (or any other vector with the unit in the yoke)

Thanks

Personally, I would be concerned if a packer was slamming my rig onto the Cypres.

If you see a packer do it, ask him/her not to... if he/she complains, just don't let them pack your rig anymore. If they can't handle "criticism" or whatever you want to call it, they aren't very professional and probably are taking other short cuts and/or not really caring about your rig's condition (i.e. taking the twists out of the brake lines periodically, checking closing loop wear, etc... the real professional packers do, esp if you ask them to.)

Not to be pedantic, but another option is to pack your own rig. It builds character and helps ensure that the only people who handle your expensive life-saving equipment are people you directly supervise and/or trust.

Good packers do this, but if you EXPECT that kind of service for 5 bucks........

Take care of your gear.

Thanks for your input Frog B|

You werent being pedantic ;)

You were making an incorrect assumption, though. You then went on and made some comments that were based on your assumption that did nothing to answer any of my questions.

I do pack my own rig frequently.
Just because I have used a packer doesnt mean that I do it 100% of the time.
While character building is always desirable, I really dont think that more packing will contribute to that end in any significant way

I would speak to the supervising rigger, if you think the packer won't take well to your criticism. If the pack is a rigger and they are doing this, then I would never let them touch my rig again.

Hopefully I can assist you here!

Firstly, most are under the impression that the control unit is damaged from what your explaining -sure packing the PC into the BOC with the rig upside down and the yoke getting slammed into the ground is never wise and I would certainly ask the packer not to do it - after all it is your rig and you have paid long bucks for it. Simple, if the packer is not prepared to respect your equipment... don't use him/her again. The control unit certainly can get damaged in this manner, but more often than not and especially on tandem rigs the control unit is damaged when rig is picked up by the yoke and carried that way.
At RWS we have noticed this a number of times. We came up with a solution which is availible on all our Container/Harnesses.. and in fact I have one on my rig - the simple carry handle!
Check the pictures I ahve attached to see what I am talking about. Its a simple $35 option that can save you some money in the long run.

Hope this helps...

This is one of the reasons I love my Vector 3...

I never put my rig upside down to pack the PC....hard to balance it like that. But some people do flip their rigs onto the yoke when closing the container.

Since the closing loop is attached to the bottom flap, there's no need to pull up on the closing loop toward the top of the container. First step of closing is the top flap, which needs to be pulled down toward the bottom. When I have to, I stand my rig up to get the first grommet, then put it on the right side for flap 2, then the left side for the last flap.

My Reflex on the other hand was very tight, and I found I often had to sit it down on the yoke to get the closing loop through the bottom flap. I tried not to since I knew it could damage the cypres, but sometimes I found it was the only way to get enough leverage.

When you say picked up and carried by the yoke do you mean that it is grabbed one handed right in the center of the yoke?

I carry it usually by putting one arm through the rig so that it hangs from my forearm OR I put it on.

Now if I see a packer slamming my rig down in any way I'll do more than just talk to them about it ;)

I just meant that I'd seen packers stand a rig on its yoke to insert the PC in the BOC.

I do not think I was trying to imply that we invented it! Carry Handles yes have been around, but never really took off...
You be suprised how many skydivers now take them! ;)
