Will 4G interfere with GPS?

It's not the"4G" that's the issue, it's how LightSquared was seeking to use their excess allocated spectrum. They want to resell it to other service providers that don't have enough/any spectrum to use in their own offerings. It's the spectrum's proximity to GPS based (which is what LightSquared was originally licensed to use it for) services.

Like Ski said, and from what I've read about LightSquared's plans over the past couple months, it's unlikely the FCC would allow this to continue, especially given the heavy-handed mood they have been in lately.

The Garmin tests didn't include an actual LightSquared transmitter. They used a signal generator to simulate it. You'd think that if they claim to have used 9 million to test the transmitters then the actual transmitter wouldn't interfere with the GPS signal.

That's true that they didn't use the same transmitters, but with a 1GHz separation, they shouldn't have been jamming the other signals without pushing some ridiculous amount of power.

Even then, it depends if its a single carrier wave, or a modulated signal, a 50 watt carrier wave will effect the transponder differently than a 4776MHz carrier at 50 watts.

Also, they could pipe the signal on the opposite polarization and it should eliminate the problems, depending if the current receivers are receiving a polarized signal, they should be able to use the opposite POL and it should reduce the problem.

One more thing, many of the current generations are using more modern receivers, which (IIRC) have the ability to receive terrestrial signals (not sure if they're enabled on all of them though) and the transmitter stations would be able to broadcast the signal needed for corrections.
