You're not going to find a hard and fast rule that has consensus. My -personal- policy is that if it's a long standing and well known member of the web site and somebody who's identity we know from real life skydiving exploits, I tend to cut them a bit more slack. Everybody goes a bit nutty every now and then. If that person says something truly egregious, I tend to want to lock the thread and keep it available for all who care to search for it. I think it helps keep people slightly more honest if they know when they say something it's on the "permanent record." We might give those people a vacation from posting for awhile, but at least from our side there's no hard feelings when they come back. However, I have no real special feeling for anybody that uses an anonymous account (one without a profile and isn't a known entity in real life) just to stir up shit.
