Nataly 38 #1 March 22, 2011 My niece is turning 5 and I'm really struggling to find her a pressie... I would like to give her something that will last a long time and that has links to her French[-Canadian] or British heritage (her mom's side emigrated from England). In previous years, I got her a Paddington Bear (and book), a Roald Dahl box-set, a (real) tea set, a red coat (similar to Paddington's trench). Can't for the life of me think of anything this year, though... She's too young for a mini scooter!! Maybe a Madeline book or two and a Madeline costume? Madeline is a story about a French orphan girl. There was also a movie made. Never even heard of it, but had a quick look and seems like a pretty good idea. CarrieByTheSea 0 #13 March 22, 2011 I just love him so much, and since I only get to see him two-to-three times a year, admittedly I always put a lot of thought into getting him the best gift ever--one that puts the rest to shame and reminds him often how much he loves his Auntie Carrie. I did not even know Lego made a camera; I was going to get him a "grownup one" before I Googled. wmw999 2,589 #16 March 22, 2011 5-year-olds like toys. It's what they do. If she already has a camera, she really doesn't need a second one. Legos and clay are fun at that age, as are dolls (yes, they're sexist, but, well, they are popular, and if there are grandmothers, they can make extra doll clothes -- that's a memory that lasts a long time. Royal Wedding stuff just teaches her to pay attention to celebrities. Who needs that. While tunnel time is a great idea, wait for a few years, and then she'll actually remember it. Nataly 38 #17 March 22, 2011 I'm hesitating to get her a toy... She has sooooo many and doesn't play with most of the ones she has. But lego or play-doh or a meccano set... Well, maybe she won't get bored of them as quickly??"There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
wmw999 2,589 #18 March 22, 2011 Those are social toys for all but the incipient engineers. So if there's someone she can play with, well, they're great solutions. If she doesn't, that's harder. If one of her parents likes to cook and will take the time to cook with her, there's always the option of a cookbook for children. wmw999 2,589 #23 March 22, 2011 No. It's a great idea. They can have two, but when there are friends over, they can fight over them. Everyone wins . If they're reasonably good quality, they can use them for years. Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it.
