Bag-lock: fact or myth

Recommended Posts

I've heard a very unusual thing. Basically, one jumper I know said that if you cutaway a baglocked main, it will be useless after it hits a ground (meaning you have to buy a new canopy). His theory was that the rapid deceleration of the bag-locked main hitting the ground somehow changes the structure of the material, making it weaker. Is it true with ZP, F-111 or any other older materials, or is it a bunch of BS???

I put 400 jumps on my main after a bag lock, sold it to someone else and they've done at least another 600 on it. I call BS.

I've had a similar experience. I second the motion on the "BS" call.

The guy is either nuts, or he's pulling your leg.

My hypothesis is that - he is mistaken.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Does this guy wear a MOJO around his neck and burn candles before jumping? I also call bull shit on this. Hitting the ground in the bag is easier on the canopy then taking a terminal opening. Think about it.:)

Tell your friend should he ever have to cutaway a bag lock that I'll buy his unusable canopy from him for $10....

That's the best Idea I've heard so far.
My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

From what altitude and is it during a full moon?

It might be a factor if said canopy were packed
using the old liquid nitrogen method...

But only a few of us "Old Timers" still do that,
and I have the optional bag heater installed on mine
should the dreaded BAG LOCK occur!

This myth came into existence after a number of jumpers were injured jumping Novas that had been cut away during a bag lock. The manufacturer claimed that hitting the ground made those Novas susceptible to sudden collapse near the ground.

Please note this is a joke.

A friend of mine cutaway a baglock, the bagged canopy landed in a woods and stayed there for at least 6 months, perhaps more before it was found. That canopy is in the air today. Your friend is full of it. ;)

It might be useless if you find it after 2 weeks in the sun or rain.B|

If you find it immediate I'll even pay $30 for it. Including the risers, bag and pilot of course, because they are useless too:P

Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit,
Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

Someone i know had a canopy that he couldn't use after he chopped it due to a baglock.

(of course - it may have had a little something to do with the fact that it subsequently got run over by a combine harvester......)

Baglocks were a lot more prevalent in the mid 70's when the squares of the day were Para-Planes and Para-Clouds, they had a very wierd reefing system. I assure you, no one threw them away after a bag lock.
