jmac49 0 #1 February 9, 2011 I'm looking for an adventurous pipe-fitter willing to quote the labor on 165000 miles of line. I'd like to bid the job connecting 180 satellites parked in the Clarke Orbit with a rigid line. I'm selling the notion that it will prevent orbit degradation permanently. I think people would be pretty annoyed when that new ring around the Earth ended up crashing into it! Orbital rings are inherently unstable. Now, add some 22,000 foot long spokes to hold it in place, and you'd have something.

Certainly you mean 22,300 mile long spokes.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Gonna be a bitch to anchor those into the ocean, unless you want to use a tripod system with the closest pieces of land. Just would make air travel a little more interesting. That'll be a hell of a waveguide to replace though, and I would recommend a flexible, as the rigid ones would probably break. Provided of course that you wanted to get a direct line and bypass that whole antenna part of the controller platform. But then, ofcourse, changing birds would be a pain in the ass."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

Yeah, well, I've been trying to get up there for some recon but every time I get a couple of miles off the planet the door opens & I have to get out. labrys 0 #11 April 26, 2011 Ok. I just noticed this. Good job. ETA: Inclination is a much larger issue than degradation in most cases. I think a multi point rigid mesh would do the trick. We will probably need professor Neal to calculate the necessary footage. Owned by Remi #?
labrys 0 #12 April 26, 2011 QuoteBut then, ofcourse, changing birds would be a pain in the ass. Bah. The whole point of putting a bird into the Clarke belt is that you don't have to change birds. Good point about air travel down below though.Owned by Remi #?

Except 22,300 mile long spokes aren't going to hold ANYTHING in place as there would be no tension at that distance.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
