skymama 37 #26 March 23, 2011 I'd like to do a garden, but I don't know anything about it and don't even know where to start, so I get too overwhelmed and just say, "fuck it" and go to the grocery store. Seriously, first you have to know which side of the house, and the soil, and what to plant, and how to space them, and how deep to do it, then how to nourish it...and then you gotta know how to keep the critters out of it. It seems very hard just to get a humongous cucumber! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

NWFlyer 2 #29 March 23, 2011 QuoteDog Poo Cat poo in mine right now. Well, it's actually in my dormant container out on my balcony. I haven't re-soiled and replanted this year yet. But I do let the feline out to roam the balcony so he can feel like a big, tough, wild outdoor kitty, and pooping in the dirt is one of his little pleasures. I suppose once I do actually plant I'll have to control that impulse a little bit lest he disturb my delicate plants. Once I plant it'll be tomatoes and basil. Maybe some other herbs, and some lettuce."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. LyraM45 0 #33 March 24, 2011 I'm a garden geek. Last summer was my first season on the west coast so it was an experimental year, but all my stuff did pretty well. This year I am going for some of the same stuff and a few new ones: Cherry tomato, heirloom tomato, early girl tomato, strawberries, zucchini, cantelope, jalapeno, green/red peppers, basil, cilantro, and a few other warm season herbs. My thyme, mint, oregano, rosemary, and fruit trees have stayed the winter and are flourishing! Just started my seedlings in a little green house to transplant in a month or so for summer. It seems very hard just to get a humongous cucumber! C'mon Skymamma. It ain't that hard. Pick a spot that gets lots of sun. Till up the ground, maybe throw a few bags of good dirt on it. Either buy the bagged soil or get a couple 5-gallon buckets of good black dirt from a garden place. Figure out what you want to grow. Tomatoes and cucumbers are really easy. So is other stuff. Ask the guy at the garden place. Get a few of the 3"-4" plants. Around here they usually run a couple bucks for a 4-pack. DO NOT PLANT MORE THAN 2 ZUCCHINI PLANTS Plant them in the dirt so that they stand up. Maybe put a welded wire fence around it to keep the critters out. Water and weed it. If a guy like me can grow what I do (my best gardening skill is neglect) then you can do fine. There is no comparison between store bought and home-grown tomatoes. More than 2 zucchini's and your friends will start to hate you for trying to overwhelm them with fresh zucchini's Because one healthy zuccini plant will usually produce enough to feed a family of four. 2, if they are doing well, will produce enough for an entire neighborhood. Any more than that and they will choke out everything else in the garden, you will make every recipie for zuccini that you can find, and still have enough to annoy all your friends, relatives, friends relatives, relatives friends and on and on. Nataly 38 #49 March 25, 2011 I *wish* I had a garden!! Let's see.. What would I have in my garden.. Well, I would like to have tomatoes. And more than one variety. Cucumbers - sooo nice when they are from the garden.. Beans - gotta have beans! Potatoes - they grow so easily and you really *can* taste a difference. Carrots.. Mmmm.. Hot peppers - yum! Herbs, too.. Thyme, sage, parsley, basil, mint, coriander. Man... I'm *HUNGRY* now!! Methinks a late-night-snack is in order before going to bed!
