sarahh 0 #27 May 6, 2011 yep, there really are.. think about it.. you work at a small local DZ.. you have no delusions of granduer, no intention of going anywhere or being noticed. So that guy who will buy your equipment.. who gives a crap about him, the effect of cheating him or your social "status" within the sport. a fella sold a friend a camera, on a payment plan. Weeks later, another friend asked where the fella was because he still had to pay him for a camera... guess where the camera was? on my friends helmet.. people will do it without blinking an eye. I have had mostly good stuff happen on here, and used a rigger as an escrow service. EFF NO, you can't trust anyone.. EVER
faulk04 0 #28 May 6, 2011 I bought my rig off DZ for 4500 and I sent the check first. I was in constant communication with the guy selling it. My check arrived a day late so I was worried about that. When he said he shipped off my rig it didn't ship till 2 days after he said he shipped it. I was again very worried but it eventually got here and have loved it ever since. I could have got burnt but the seller seemed fine so I went with it
Bolas 5 #29 May 6, 2011 Unless you know the person or are taking physical posession, use an escrow to protect both of you. If you know people at the DZ where they jump, they can be used as well. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
catfishhunter 2 #30 May 6, 2011 As I said i sell all over the world. If I had to use an escrow everytime I would go out of business. it just surprises me there are that many crooked skydivers that make it neccessary. We are a pretty small group and to have that many crooks amongst us is scary don't ya think? MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT Life is Short and we never know how long we are going to have. Southern_Man 0 #35 May 6, 2011 QuoteWe are a pretty small group and to have that many crooks amongst us is scary don't ya think? I don't know how many crooks are actually out there, I know that I am not able to always tell who is and hwo isn't. A canopy for $1600, which isn't all the money in the world but is still significant to me, would require some kind of surety. Could be escrow, could be somebody trustworthy to vouch for you, etc. Escrow is the most practical at my level because I don't really know many people in skydiving who could vouch for strangers (unless they were relatively local). I don't think it ruins anything, Just another step."What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
billvon 3,076 #36 May 6, 2011 >We are a pretty small group and to have that many crooks amongst us >is scary don't ya think? Not really. There are true crooks everywhere. But more often, there are just people who don't think they are crooks who can rationalize taking advantage of someone else. "Hey, I tried to send the money and the address he gave me was wrong. Not my fault. I'll pay him, no problem, as long as he comes out here." "I said I'd pay him by Thurs but we were weathered out last weekend and I gotta pay the rent. He's an instructor too, he'll understand." "I thought the canopy had about 100 jumps on it, maybe I was off a little, but it's still in really good shape." warpedskydiver 0 #37 May 7, 2011 "Well when I broke up with him I realized I had contributed somehow so it only made sense that my new jump pilot husband and I sold my ex's trailer without a title and without his knowledge or permission, hey it was only 4k and the title does not represent ownership in my mind" This was most likely the thought process of two people who I will never associate with nor hold my tongue when they profess to be good and decent people. Scum comes in all shapes forms and income levels. No wonder they quit jumping, we all knew what they had done. The sheriff should have been called and arrests should have been made, they could have said goodbye to their careers as well.
