If you get distracted partway through and don't finish the procedure - hey, it can happen - then you're showing off less with an unbuttoned button than with an unzipped zip. Oh, and also I find if the button is already holding the two halves of the fly together then it can make it harder to locate the zip slider. As for those zipped underpants - those are just wrong. One of the best functions of underwear is to avoid getting skin trapped in the zip. If you have a zip on your underwear, you're asking for trouble.
