In the Early Days of Skydiving

Recommended Posts

I got this Groupon for the Sky Swing in FL. Look what the blurb said about our sport.

"In the early days of parachuting, skydivers were encouraged to build themselves a chute after jumping from the plane, using items grabbed at random, such as clouds or living birds. Enjoy the evolution of safe sky-based sports with today’s Groupon:...
view deal. Kissimmee (Old Town) "

WTF?:D:D I've jumped a "cloud" back in the day, but I sure didn't build it out of bird chunks. Does anyone know what they were getting at?

Nice. That's actually not at all uncommon for Groupon - clearly they've got a group of imaginative, smart-ass writers doing their copy. :D

"Build Themselves a CHUTE" !!!!!:o

Hell, i hardly trusted the Damn chutes we were given by the so-called "experts"... I sure wasn't gonna,, "make my own" !!!.. and expect to STAY very long , with the sport....back then when we were pummetting to the ground , under cheapos..and 24 foot rounds.. i'd leave the parachute making..... to the experts... still DO!!!!! :P;):)
Amazon. I too jumped a Star (strato), but ONLY once.... and promised myself, i'd never do THAt again....:DB|;)
man it was twitchy , @ MY wingloading...
Most all of my early ram air jumps were heavyweight Clouds. On the first one,, I'm pulling the toggles.. :|[:/] and thinkin' Man that is sooommmee heavy toggle pressure...:S
so i'm flying it around,, and land it a little short of the pea gravel, and i say to my buddy... "I thought i'd get a bit more Drive"... and he looks and says " You idiot!!" "You never took the toggles OUT of the Brake loops..." :o:S:)
hahahah this was before a 'cats eye' brake containment... hahaha
hard toggles...
hard head...

JM....
the more i see of "discount brokers, selling skydiving".. the more i cringe...

I have a JetStream you can jump;):) It only has about 50 jumps on it.. I jumped it once

Talk about toggle pressure... it has TWO brake lines on each side that go up thru a ring at the top of the riser. You have to pull both lines down thru the ring... not so freakin easy... oh and to get iot going straight ahead again out of the turn... you have to pull the opposite toggle down to balance the canopy back out...

I really should clear out my storage a bit... WAY too much old... interesting gear.

XL Cloud. I had one...probably why my ankle hurts most days. Glide path of a rock.

These are actually very humorous.

I get local Groupon offers sent to me on a regular basis. At the onset there is always a "silly" description relating to the offer at hand.

creative, unique, I like it.

Ahhh, so it's dumb on purpose. I rarely read those closely. Thanks. :D

Sometimes I do and they often make me giggle. For example, here's the copy for two of them today. Seems they like to slip in the random phrase or two to see if you're paying attention. :D

Surfing provides man a physically interactive mode of sea travel, unlike stowing away on a galleon or hitchhiking with an emotionally distant manatee. Ride the salty swells with today's Groupon: for $50, you get a two-hour introductory group surfing lesson from the University of Surfing at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica (a $100 value). All necessary equipment is included. Absolute beginners, out-of-practice novices, and transfer students are all equally welcome.

Spice addiction can come with a multitude of unwanted side effects, such as the compulsive desire to steal baked goods from windowsills and the ability to fold space. Get a legal fix with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of fresh-baked cinnamon rolls and more at Cinnaholic in Berkeley.
