shah269 0 #3 June 23, 2011 This will be amzing for the camera people. Think of all those perfect shots that went bad due to focus? NovaTTT 2 #4 June 23, 2011 That's pretty cool - but the SUBJECT of your post is misleading. I thought you must have finally busted a nut with a real girl "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." pincheck 0 #5 June 23, 2011 sometimes Camera people do it intentionally to focus on the thing they want its called "depth of Field". It depends on the picture but i would guess it will appeal to most normal people. Meso 38 #6 June 23, 2011 Pretty cool concept, wonder if it will take off and if other large companies will incorporate similar technology in the future. Though the downside is that the art of photography will become even more raped. I can just picture all the 13 year old hipster kids running around clicking and just processing their failure to understand the equipment to make them look more talented than they are. Photography would then completely rely on subject matter and composition. Still an interesting development none the less.
Meso 38 #7 June 23, 2011 QuoteCamera people do it intentionally to focus on the thing they want its called "depth of Field" I actually wonder how it works in terms of DOF, I was unable to read the whole article but I assume it will depend a lot on the lens that's used, I mean it may not make a different to most photographers anyway, since if you're looking for a shallow DOF, I`m assuming you'd still do it just the usual way, use your cameras lowest aperture number, set your focus point and go. It was very hard fun work. My grandfather gave me his old camera with some old equipment and I did my best. I would say I got some good shots and lots of bad ones. And then film went out the door. This really makes things a bit too simple if you ask me but still, what amazing technology. The dissertation on which the camera is based is on the company's web site. It's a fascinating read. The camera depends on a high pixel count imager and places micro lenses in front of it and between the regular lens. The micro lens splits up portions of the light and then record smaller versions of the main image at multiple locations on the imager. The main image effect looks a bit like what you might imagine (or at least Hollywood frequently portrays) a bee sees; hundreds of images each with a very slightly different view of the world. Actual final images are then synthesized out of this array of images through computer software. Focus can be near, medium, far or complete and anywhere in between. There is a tradeoff being made; several actually. Maximum resolution of the imager is being traded off for depth of field resolution. This is going to be an expensive camera and it's also going to take up many times the amount of memory people are used to dealing with. Still, it's an awesome piece of work.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Meso 38 #10 June 24, 2011 Thanks for the summary. Interesting stuff. Though as a friend pointed out when I showed him, if you look at the image quality, all the images are quite soft, even at the focal points. If you're going to be spending a lot of money, in my opinion - quality sharp images will always trump over versatility in post processing. In fact, even one of my old budget lenses has a sharper result in the focal points.

shah269 0 #12 June 24, 2011 Hum...how can I put it? The immage is "good enough" that is to say for the average joe who just takes bad pictures...it is simply good enough. And that's where the real money is IF they can make it cheap enough. For your average joe or camera dude this will be worth it. For someone who's an artist...not.Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay.
