Firstly, check with your instructors or your S&TA and see what they think you should be jumping. Choosing the correct canopy type and size for your skill level is of the upmost importance and since we've never seen you jump, we can't tell you what to get.

As for containers...well, that's a loaded question, if you do a search you'll find a lot of people recommending a lot of different containers. The moral of the story, though is if you find a used set of gear you like, have your rigger check it out before you buy.

Check around your DZ for gear being sold and check the classifieds here.

Be careful with ebay. You can check in with me on any questions you might have about items you find there. Feel free to PM me.

The classifieds here are great.

Have an idea of what you want before you start shopping.

Definitely ask your local rigger to inspect any prospective purchases.
Local riggers also frequently act as middle-men in used-gear sales.
Typically the seller mails the gear to your local rigger/DZ who inspects it and tells you what repairs are needed. If you agree to the sale, he repairs and repacks the gear and holds the gear until he hears that the money has arrived at the seller's house.

I only have a few jumps.

After 3 months of looking into purchasing my own gear, I found it was best for me to buy the pieces separately.

I bought a new Mirage, jumpsuit and PD reserve. And a 7 years old cypress, a Sabre2-150 with 40 jumps, and (2) used pro-dytters on it from dz.com. A used Protrack from ebay. I haven’t had any problems.

I am only 5’0”. After using student gear to my license, I decided I REALLY wanted a rig that fit. I wanted a new container.

But want doesn’t equal need.

After looking into it alot. This is what I discovered, I may be wrong. Most people giving advice are guys that weight more then us. They all say "buy a used container, because you are going to down size."

But chicks, (well, may be just me) won't down size as fast as guys. So this really didn't make sense to me.

Large people start out with large canopies. The change in canopy performance increase as the canopies get smaller. Given this, I bought a container that holds a 150. One day I could but a 135 in it. I don't plan on going below a 135 for several hundred jumps, if ever. So this container will last me a VERY long time.

I started out by asking questions at the dropzone and on dz.com. (Both Gravitygirl and AggieDave have been heros. Thank you.) I also sent emails to several manufactures before buying. Some manufactures didn’t email me back. Mirage had the best customer service and I like how their rig looks the most. I bought a G3 and absolutely love it.

I think new jumps suit is the best way to go.

I originally bought a new Smart reserve because the price was right. After waiting 7 weeks for delivery, Aerodyne informed the gear shop I used it would be a few more weeks. This was totally unacceptable. It was 2pm on Friday and I had been planning to jump the next day with my rig for 2 months. Don of the parachute shop made a phone call and I had a PD reserve at 1 pm on Saturday. (Thank you Don and PD)

I only have a few jumps. My feelings may change with experience.

I tried using ebay, but between the fraud, the stolen items, and the clueless whuffos reselling gear they somehow obtained, it was way too scary for any potential savings.

I disagree. No one's landings are perfect when they are starting out. It wont take long to tear up the knees and ass and get grass stains all over your $300 jumpsuit.
