popsjumper 2 #1 June 23, 2011 General Aviation News, June 2, 2011: Cirrus Design Corp. has been cleared by a jury in New York of responsibility in the crash of a plane piloted by New York Yankees player Cory Lidle and a flight instructor. It was pilot error that caused them to crash into the side of an apartment building according to NTSB investigators. Lidle's widow filed the $50 million suit and it was denied by the jury. Wow. I'm impressed that a jury actually did the right thing. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. lawrocket 3 #2 June 23, 2011 Cirrhus brought in Hoot Gibson to testify as an expert for the defense. There was some interesting legal wrangling about what the jury would be allowed to hear regarding who Hoot Gibson is and what he's done. My wife is hotter than your wife. lawrocket 3 #8 June 25, 2011 Yep. He had one of the greatest and chilling quotes in astronaut history. STS-27 was the second launch after CHallenger. Altlantis was the vehicle on a top secret military mission. On launch, the ablative coating on the nose of the right SRB came loose and SEVERELY damaged the tiles - considered the worst damage prior to Columbia's demise. Because of the classified nature of the mission, mission control could not get clear images. The crew knew what they saw but the encrypted images were bad. So Mission control told them nothing wrong. A few hours before re-entry, Hoot told the crew, "No reason to die all tensed up" and went to watch out the windows. Also during that flight, there was a devastating earthquake in Armenia. When he debriefed the other astronauts they were curious about the top secret payload. He said, "All I can say is that Armenia was our first test target - and we only had the weapon set to stun." Said Mullane about him that feminists hated him, but within 15 minutes of meeting him wanted to have his baby. A guy I'd love to meet. My wife is hotter than your wife. riddler 0 #9 June 26, 2011 Quote Altlantis was the vehicle on a top secret military mission. It was a Lacrosse satellite. They are classified at launch time and were for a long time after, but I don't recall it being top-secret. I think it was at the secret level which is one step down. STS-27 was a few years before I worked on any launches, but the way I remembered it was shuttle missions were generally at the "secret" level if they were classified at all. And anything above secret was launched on an unmanned vehicle. Of course, the rules may have changed - did anyone here work on STS-27? It's declassified now, so feel free to discuss Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
