I heard a pretty good story that I'll repeat here (can't think of who told me it to give credit where its due).

A mother and daughter came out to do a tandem... the daughter went up first and the mother was on the ground acting very nervous. The TI and student were in freefall with the videographer.

The mother sees the parachute open and looks very relieved and then someone walks up to her and points to the videographer still in freefall and shouts "OH MY GOD. HE DROPPED HER!"

1971 in Jacksonville, Fla.jumping out of Bobby Tyers 172. Herlong Field wouldn't let us land on the airport so we landed in the cow pasture across the street. (Now a trailer park, I think.) I had to babysit my nephews who were 7 and 8 years old. It's a cow pasture so I just let 'em loose and went about my normal jumping. I happened to be up in the plane with 2 student who were doing hop & pops at 4,000 ft. I went down to 2,000. My mom came to pick the kids up (she never liked me jumping and NEVER EVER wanted to watch). Well, Mike Strickland walks up to my mom when she asks, "Where Bob?" He points up at the plane just as we get out. 2 canopies open and I'm in freefall. He starts shouting, "Pull, Bob. Pull." When I got down, my mom and the kids were gone and Mike said my mom didn't see the humor. I thoght it was funny as hell.

Not mine but John K. TI at the ranch had a tandem guy, wanted the "scare me shitless" ride. The funny part was not planned. At pull time John yells pull, student goes to pull but also grabs the harness, pulling for all he's worth and not getting any where. John realizes, thinks quick and yells in his ear "Shit it's not working, were gonna DIE" Student FREAKS out, John lets it happen till he really has to pull, then pulls left handle. Funny as hell. Student got what he wanted.

Oh yeah, actually saw a student almost cry with this one on Saturday. Another instructor looks over, grabs one of the hooks that is snapped back, he simply unsnapped it but every skydiver around just gave a look of shear terror. The girl, thinking the harness is now broken starts freaking out as the TI pretends like he's trying to fix the now "broken" harness. :D:D:D:D

I'll play the old fuddy duddy.

If it's done for humor and the student understands its humor, no big deal.

But, if the student is actually caused to be more fearful, and really believes she is in more danger because of the joke, then that goes over the line. We shouldn't be terrorizing students for our personal amusement.

Hi JR

I agree with you 100% except the fuddy duddy part IMO your acting like a mature adult.

Messing with a students gear:S Is HS bull shit

Terrorizing students is HS bull shit.

We were a little more subtle and actually tried to make the ride to altitude a Fun experience for the student. With the instuctor's permission.

Watch the look of terror on the face of the student and smile at them. A big ass smile, the more people on the load the better. Rather than terrorizing the student some of them actually relax a little bit.

IMO that's a good thing. :)
Unless your a bully and enjoy hurting, terrorizing folks like you used to do in HS or was it junior HS.Thats How you get your rocks off gather a clique etc.
