bertusgeert 1 #1 June 29, 2011 So...I went to REI yesterday for a session on fast & light backpacking. One guy went through his food, saying he uses PROBAR as they have "a lot of calories in a complex way". I've never heard of/used them, but was intrigued why this very experienced backpacker would use PROBAR over Clifbar. I've been using Clifbars for a long time. They go for around ~$1.35. ProBar seems to be on avg. ~$3.20. They contain maybe a 1/3 more calories and is about 1/3 heavier, which could explain 1/3 more price. But ~$2? For any fitness/nutrition nuts...would there be a good nutritional reason for the price difference? Which would you prefer? http://theprobar.com/products/original/whole-berry-blast/ http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_clif_bar/ Edit to add: I figured this was relevant here, since we're all "fast & light backpackers". --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei! jonstark 8 #5 June 30, 2011 When climbing big walls my preferred bar was Clif. I tried lots of the others and had to choke down some real crap having nothing else to eat. I'd have to try a PROBAR for palatability before I took one on a trip for real. (and it would have to be really damn good!) Another important attribute of the Clif bar is it keeps one pretty "regular" which is important 1000' up a wall. jon

jonstark 8 #7 July 1, 2011 Clif will be a LOT better than the old Power Bars in cold. They don't make me fart as bad as power bars either. jon
jrjny 0 #8 July 1, 2011 I run/cycle regularly. My experience is that both powerbar/cliff bar provides the same energy boost and for $1.00/bar on amazon they're a good deal. On a 3 hr ride, 57 miles or so I eat 3 bars and have about 2 quarts of gatorade. At day's end - your body needs simple sugars and protein during hard aerobic exercise, in the approximate proportion of: 3:1, simple carbs:protein There are many companies with offerings in this space but your body doesn't know whether sugar/protein came from mgf A or mfg B. enjoy the workouts, Jeff

pope 0 #11 July 7, 2011 I prefer the PRObar to most cliff products, with the exception of CLIFshots. PRO bars are vegan and raw, and are really, really good tasting. As far as energy goes, they have always given me at least as much if not more energy than clif products. I chock up the extra cost to the quality of ingredients. Try a few flavors. I wasn't fond of the mocha ones, but the pretzel one is amazing!
Remster 30 #12 July 7, 2011 QuoteCLIFshots I prefer the Gu's. Except for HammerGel Raspberry: its like putting a bunch of fresh berries in your mouth... OMG... So good... Overall, my nutrition/hydration strategy when cycling is: - Any ride 1 hour or less: nothing but water - Rides of about 2 hours: 1 Gu and/or 1 Gatorade water bottle (+1 water) - My 3 hour hammerfest saturday AM ride: 1 Cliff bar for bfast with a large coffee 1/2 hour before the ride; 1 small costo nut bar 5 minute before the ride; 2-3 Gu's during the ride; 1 Gatorade bottle and 1-2 water bottles - Centuries: Gu's every 1/2 hour; 1/2 a Cliff bar every hour; 2-3 gatorade bottles; as much water as I can get.Remster
