DFWAJG 4 #1 August 12, 2011 My friend has to adopt out his cat. I'm interested in having her. But...there are 3000 miles between us (almost). Is there anyone traveling from the Philly area to California that would be willing to transport her?

Obviously I cant help with the transports, but I have transported cats in cars several thousand miles before. Might i suggest, visiting a Vet and asking for some Cat valium, for the sake of both the Cat and the driver. Also, make certain the cat has a constant source of water, and fresh air, and a towl or rug over the cage helps too.You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! Obviously I cant help with the transports, but I have transported cats in cars several thousand miles before. I got a carrier small enough to be airline approved for under-seat stowage, gave my cat a kitty sedative, and flew him with me twice when moving 1000+ miles at a time. He disliked that a lot less than driving. It just takes a health certificate and pet charge.
oldwomanc6 60 #4 August 12, 2011 +1 on the kitty quaaludes. I have over a dozen trips by car across the US, most with a cat, birds and kids. I never used a cage, though. A carrier on occasion (to transport from the car to hotel room). Mostly the cat has been allowed to "run" free in the car. Believe it or not, they get used to it rather quickly. I've never had one run amok, and they like settling in on a seat or a lap. No matter what way you choose to do this, make sure the cat has a harness (NOT A COLLAR), and never take the cat out of the carrier or open the door of the car OR HOTEL without a leash on. They're tricky I lied when I said I never used a cage. I aways kept the birds in there lisa WSCR 594 FB 1023 CBDB

Continental, according to her, has a "pet airline" department that seemed to be pretty helpful to her. As the thread mentions, she carried on one cat and checked the other as baggage. Things seemed to go pretty smoothly. I know you aren't flying but it might be worth a call to Continental to see if they'll let your buddy drop the cat off at one end and let you pick up at the other. The above thread also mentions googling for pet transport agencies; there are several that basically broker for you and arrange the transportation. I'm glad you're a cat person. I, however, am not. If you aren't happy with the cat you get, I'm more than happy to volunteer my wife's two cats, they're much closer than Philly. Hell, I'd even drive them to Fresno for you! Problem is the wife would probably disown me and you'd end up adopting me as well. Elvisio "back to the drawing board" Rodriguez
Andy0689 0 #10 August 13, 2011 We've done it before also through the airlines. Just ship the pet as air cargo. Check before you drop off to make sure your carrier is the correct size. It's not cheap (for a cat). Also, you'll need a vet certificate of health stating he'll survive the flight. The vet will know what you need when you (or current owner) schedule the appointment I'd prefer to just put 'em down before each move and buy new ones when we get to where we're going but my wife insists they are part of the family. Last move, we only had one cat and it was about $150 to fly him Delta Air Cargo. 4 months after we got here, he ran away and we haven't seen him since Halloween.Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! Moving from Seattle to Oakland with two cats was bad enough - I can't imagine a cross-country trip. Even though they were in separate carriers, they'd feed off each other with the whining.
