WOW Netflix went to shit.

Recommended Posts

Really, Netflix streaming has gone to shit!
It's as if they found the worst movies no one wants to watch and they made them all available to download at the most pixilated image EVER!

The encoding on Netflix varies wildly. Some stuff is pretty good, other titles are pure crap.

I'm 100% certain they do not get clones of masters to play with but simply rip DVDs the best they can. Which sometimes is good and other times I'm curious if the operator even understood what the software did.

Additionally they seem to rip in order to have several different streams available and serve up the quality of stream dependent on the bandwidth available during a check they make in the first few seconds you attempt to connect. If you have crappy bandwidth, you'll get a crappier stream. You'll also get a crappy stream if, at the moment you first connected you're temporarily throttled due to somebody on your network hogging the bandwidth, even if it's only for the few seconds you initially connect.

My biggest beef with them is they rotate their available streaming titles. This probably has little to do with them making a conscious decision, but rather what deals they have worked out with what studios at any given moment.

A few months ago, you could get all of Kurosawa's films via streaming. Today, just a couple. To me, that's an awful way to deal with a library. If I need to see a scene from Seven Samurai, I NEED to see that scene today; not on some crazy assed rotating schedule.

Right now, they -are- the best game in town, even with the 80% price increase. What they need is some competition to force them to up their game.

I'm sure it's just your IT guys messing with you. I streamed a couple movies so far this weekend and they looked fine.

On another note, I'm still trying to decide:

1) Accept the price increase to $16 for unlimited 1-at-a-time DVDs plus streaming,

2) Pay $8 for just DVD rentals and drop streaming

3) Pay $8 for just streaming and drop DVDs

4) Pay $12 for unlimited 2-at-a-time DVDs and drop streaming, or

5) Cancel!
It's all been said before, no sense repeating it here.

YEAH YEAH YEAH the weather is crap....and well what can you do? Hunker down, grab a beer and watch a movie....or at least one that is available to stream.
I have to admit Prince of Persia came in so so at first but got better as it got along but the quantity and quality of movies available for download is just crap!
It was so much better last year they actually had recent releases but now...it's horrible.
Well I guess I'll just go ground launch off the roof of my condo to kill some time!

DVDs from Netflix. :P

I like their streaming selection too (and the picture quality is usually excellent here), but most new releases only seem to be available on DVD.

I've been looking into using Redbox though, and that seems like a good alternative if you mostly watch new releases. It's not instant watch, but it's pretty easily available (out here anyway).

Your reasoning is flawed.

When you decide not to use Netflix and instead use another service such as Amazon, the people that created the thing you're enjoying still make money and the people that have the crappy service are justly punished for not providing a good service.

When you just STEAL the thing, nobody gets paid. It disincentives the creation of the product to begin with, so investors are less willing to finance projects and people don't get jobs.

STEALING your media is the absolutely worst thing you can do to the entertainment industry. It lowers the quality of product and puts people out of work.

And of course . . . YOU'RE STEALING.

first off, this aint SC. :P

2ndly, i whole-heartedly agree with what you say.

i have never downloaded a single album from a musician, i also dont do itunes or anything. call me old-fashioned, but i like to go to my record-shop that i know the owner and employees for over 20yrs.

you know, the kind of joint i can go in, tell them what i feel like, then i go to the fridge and grab me a beer (for free!), walk back and receive a staple of 10 or 20 cd's (WITH the booklets, not every customer gets that), sit down and enjoy the tunes. i dont go there very often, but i usally end up spending like 2- or 300$ when i do.

oh, and sometimes, the guys and girls even share their lunch with me! :)
sometimes i just hop in to say hi and some smalltalk.

i merely made a suggestion to shah as an other option; what he does with that information, i cant tell. i'm also not in the place to judge if that is right or wrong.

but i sure as hell like a good service that i pay for; see my example above, and that is OUTSTANDING!

The Library, it contains things called BOOKS, but they require some patience tolerance and imagination to master them.

I've got well over 80 gigs on a HDD from Amazon's video service. The only problem I've had, was a couple of films that were temporarily unavailable for viewing. That pissed me off as I had already bought them. It was totally avoidable, though. Just download a copy of whatever you buy. Then, there's no problem. You get two full copies, & two portable ones w/every purchase.

I buy a lot of books & stuff off Amazon. So, it works out well for me.

God how can I put it?
Aaaahhh....You know how I "deeply truly madly with every fiber of my being" detest engineers? Well it appears that Netflix is catering to them and their tastes in movies.

And I'm not saying this to be mean though being mean to engineers is as easy as pushing over "well rounded women" waiting in line at your local Dairy Queen (there has to be a joke about well rounded women waddling in line at Dairy Queens). But really! Every single straight to DVD craptacular SciFi movie ever made is available for your streaming enjoyment! But if you want to watch the latest release that is about three months old...not available?

WTF! NO I DON'T WANT TO WATCH HIGHLANDER 7 "McDumbass finally gives head" And really REALLY every single directors extended scene remake of Fire Fly? REALLY!

Do the world a favor, you know how engineers are total control freaks and are not very good when it comes to social interactions or exposure to sunlight? Well it appears they have taken over the world have mold it into some sort of dork utopia!
I want my Block Buster back, I want my local record store, I WANT MY LOCAL BOOK STORE BACK!

Do the world a favor, if you are walking down the street today and you see and engineer or scientists...hint hint they will be wearing a no name polo shirt that is one size two big and a pants that are dirty and one size too small....push them into oncoming traffic. Extra points will be given if said engineer is pushed onto train tracks...engineer / train engineer joke.

That way we will prevent the total dorkification of the world where one day we will be reproducing via pipets and flirting cross country utilizing some worthless non Microsoft product because it's and I quote now "just that much better".

Save the world, save TV! Kill an engineer!
