Shoulder pain after laparoscopic surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anybody had this? I just had surgery this morning and the gas used to inflate my abdomen is KILLING my phrenic nerve causing severe shoulder pain and breathing difficulty...

Anything other than hot pads and drugs I can do to alleviate the pain? I can't even cry because it hurts so bad to breathe. [:/]

Thanks in advance
And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant.

You need to log off get yourself in the car and head to the ER if you are having difficulty breathing. If you do not have anyone to drive you then call 911 and have them come. DO NOt HESITATE TO GO! This can be a serious side effect from the surgery/nerve block they did. DO NOT WAIT!

I just had laparoscopic surgery yesterday, (hernia repair). Just before surgery, I was talking to the nurse and the anesthesiologist, and they mentioned referred pain to the shoulder could happen. I did not experience it.

I hope both you and Tia are feeling better soon.

I had a hernia at 20yo from an industrial accident. The surgen said something about the repair possibly no being permanent.

This time the repair was laparoscopic w/ mesh, so it isn't nearly as difficult to walk as the first time. However I have three small incisions between the belly button and the...you know...that feel like I was stabbed with an ice pick.

That'll teach you to try and impress girls... :P

It wasn't trying to impress them, I think it was the strenuous workout one of those young ones gave me.;)

I should clarify...I was in really bad form from this last night..

This is one of the apparent side effects from CO2, and the doc warned me of it. Just seems I was on the extreme spectrum of shoulder and breathing pain. Also just wondering if anybody who has experienced this has found some ways to make it hurt less until it dissipates.

No, don't do that. Trust me, he's okay with the price he paid . . .;)

Well damnit, he traded down to an even younger model then. :(

I know it's hard to reconcile , but I think eeneR may be the one referred to as the young one. Hey, it's all relative, right? ;)

I'm hoping this means you're feeling better. I have no answers but at least a phone call to the doc might help.

Well, I'll echo the "go get checked out" advice if you're having trouble breathing. As for the pain, I gutted through it and walked around a bit. Get the CO2 moving around a bit -- it seemed to dissipate faster that way (at least for me). Don't go nuts. Just slow, easy movements around the house first (reaching up, slow trunk twists, easy & slow side bends), then as it eases up walk slowly around the block.

Did you get an incentive sporameter (sp?)? While that will be uncomfortable at first, it will help expand your lungs and work everything out of your thoracic cavity (once you can breathe more comfortably, of course).

Good luck! [:/]
