International airport air side security

Recommended Posts

Interesting discovery today. I took a wrong turn when going to the rental car return and ended up behind a large international airport.

There was a set of gates leading onto the runway that had obviously been forgotten wide open with nobody in sight. Signs all over the place saying it was a restricted area etc. I was still really tempted to take a wrong turn and play the dumb foreigner. It would be pretty cool to drive up to a 747B|

And to be arrested, and to make the evening news? ;)

I don't trust the yanks. They'd probably shoot first and ask questions later.

This, laying face down on the tarmac with a M4 aimed at you is not a fun way to start the day, trust me on that one.

They'd probably be extra rough with him in their embarrassment at the security breach!

Seriously Nigel, you should call the airport to report it. It's funny, but at the same time it's... well, kind of not. :o

That's not a bad idea. I am sitting in the airport for the next couple of hours with nothing better todo. I'll go and have a friendly chat with some-one from the TSA. If I don't post for a few days please get an SAS rescue party off to gitmo for me:)

It wouldn't be cool to have to deal with the repercussions. Because of the "signs all over the place" the "dumb foreigner" wouldn't work. Especially because you speak English (well, Brit actually, but it's close enough).

I used to deliver to an airfreight terminal. Truckloads of auto parts being shipped overseas. It would have been pretty easy to simply walk out the other side of the warehouse, onto the concrete, and right up to the big plane.
Past all the signs that said not to.

The guys on the dock liked to tell the story of the driver who had his young son (3 or 4) with him and decided to show him the plane close up. So they went past all the signs saying "Restricted Area", "Do Not Enter", "Customs Personnel Only" (really) and walked up to the plane...

And spent the next few hours in a small room explaining why he had decided to do that.

So, TSA got caught with their pants down...again.

Since signs are good enough there, signs should be good enough at the boarding gate, eh? Think of all the radiation therapy cost savings!!
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Well the TSA supervisor was really nice. Said thanks very much and gave me a coupon for a free enhanced patdown:D

I'd have been pissed with you though if it caused a security alert and delayed my flight! The thought crossed my mind about 10 seconds after I spoke to the guy.

You can't blame them southerners. The guy manning the gate probably saw a sheep and got distracted:o.
