Marinus 0 #1 November 17, 2011 For all the Game of Thrones fan boys and girls: bummer, this topic isn't about nerdy fantasy series with loads of gratuitous sex. *) This topic is about winter and how much I hate that season. Dutch winter is a lot like British summer: cold, wet, grey, foggy and utterly depressing. Above that the day length is far too short to. In the end of December there's 7 1/2 hour between dawn and dusk. Not as bad as Scandinavia, but it still sucks when the sun doesn't rise before 9 AM and already sets in the afternoon. It probably doesn't help that I suffer from winter blues. It's not so much a depression, but more the all encompassing desire to hibernate. said desire usually sets in around 1 December and lasts till around 1 March. Being Dutch means you've to celebrate Christmas 3 times. This means that as an extra bonus I've to pretend to be happy while I'm not 2 times more then normal people. Of course the winter blues are manageable by 2 different approaches: exercise and daylight, which usually means I've to spend a lot of time outside in less then optimal weather. I can't wait for it Well, tell me how much YOU hate winter. *) OK, I'm pulling your leg here. I'm the most rabid GoT fan boy out there. So you may talk about GoT in this topic (and all of my other topics for that matter) GoT is Generally on Topic as far as I'm concerned.
CanuckInUSA 0 #2 November 17, 2011 Winter is coming? LOL ... winter is already here where I am. I live in Western Canada and Western Canada equals Siberia once Mother Nature throws her cold shoulder our way. Of course it could be worse. At least I don't live in Winterpeg. Here in Cowtown we occasionally get the warm winds (called Chinooks) from our mountains which gives us a temporary reprieve from our Siberian like temperatures. It's not that cold here (yet). But you know it's cold outside when the suspension on your car freezes. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Marinus 0 #5 November 17, 2011 Over here it doesn't get really gold. -15 C/0 F is about the most extreme we get, average winter temperature os more like 0 C/30 F But in fact I don't really mind the cold sunny days. I really get grumpy when there's those days with relatively mild, wet and grey weather. Sometimes we don't see the sun for weeks in a row. But "Siberian weather" in winter wouldn't be my thing either.

We live in America's version of CRAPPY ENGLISH weather... but at least a quick drive over the pass and voila... we get sunshine in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains.I did drive up to Heather Meadows on Mt Baker... and there was already LOTS of fresh snow up there 2 weeks ago. Then again about 10 years ago.. they got 120 FEET of snow up there. They are opening for the season this Friday... woo hoohttp://www.mtbaker.us/1011/

Marinus 0 #11 November 17, 2011 60 is too cold for a T shirt. It's an acceptable temperature in spring. Anything over 70 is considered warm here. 85 and up is considered tropical, 100 and over apocalyptic.

That's great. For the nearest sunshine I would have to drive like 700 miles or so. I would probably do it anyway if I had the time for it which I haven't. I would gladly spent the winter anywhere were winter doesn't exist.

I would gladly spent the winter anywhere were winter doesn't exist. For those of us who call Siberia home (err ... I mean Western Canada) the sun is usually shining when it is -30C. So it is a mixed bag. The sun is nice, the -30C temperatures not so nice. If push came to shove I find the -30C with sunshine easier to take than a cloudy rainy climate only a degree or two above freezing. I spent a year in Vancouver and the sunny summer was awesome, but the rainy cool winter sucked ass. That is of course as long as you do not have to spend too long outside in the -30C temperatures. Being inadequately clothed and exposed to -30C for a certain period of time can and has been known to be fatal. There is a reason why most of Canada's homeless migrate to Vancouver. At least there they can survive a winter night on the streets. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

But last year we got some decent snow. I actually happen to like those days that look like this: http://old.wallcoo.net/nature/Window7_Europe_Wallpapers_1920x1200/images/Netherlands,%20Winter%20in%20Nederland%20(Winter%20in%20the%20Netherlands).jpg But it usually looks more like this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/1799544184_ea85c0486b.jpg B
