Maybe its the blatant disregard for some of the simplest of laws to obey, just to save a few mins?

it has little to do with time saving (for me) and more to do with getting away from retarded drivers.
BTW I break ZERO laws when riding, stationary splitting is not illegal

But it IS here... I've never been to Australia, so I cannot comment on the driving there, but here in Florida, it IS illegal and that's where I'm pissed off at.;)

So, I take it that you drive EXACTLY the speed limit, or under, since you have such a vehement desire to obey traffic laws.

FWIW, I don't split traffic, even though I think it's stupid that I can't in stationary traffic. It's like saying to someone turning right on red that they can't go if there's a car in front of them and a gap to go past them.

ETA - yeah... In the UK it is legal to filter and I regularly had to deal with aggressive car drivers who deliberately tried to block bikers. I'm not sure if they realise just how much they are putting your life at risk for the sake of jealousy. And I do think it boils down to jealousy, plain and simple. They are stuck and it pisses them off that you are not. In France it is also legal and after coming from the UK I was pleasantly surprised that people's attitude to bikers is totally different. They actually let you through and generally respect your right to be on the road. I think instead of hating bikers they kind of admire them. Because the weather is so hot, there are a lot more bikers on the road and a lot of car drivers also own a bike/scooter so that helps.

I loved Belgium for that same mentality. I would actually have cars or big trucks moving over to the right to let me by when I wasn't even meaning to pass. France and some of the other countries were nice too. I do have to say it was what I believe was a drunk Belgian that gave me my screen name though. :S

I usually make as much space as possible to help them pass, and also try not to be too close behind bikers. I wouldn't want to feel the bump of a body under my wheels while I try to avoid the collision... [:/]

My favorite...during a bike rally in Daytona.
Traffic at a standstill, an air cooled bike overheats in Florida heat....
20 feet to the entrance to the Iron Horse.
All the visiting tourist bikers jump to the paved shoulder of the road to get into the bar....
Mr Friendly Ticket Guy interferes with your party to offer you a ticket.
[:/]

Thankfully I saw someone get one of those tickets many years ago....I stay in line. Dammit.

No but you do see the mantle before you get to the fire stage. If it doesn't meet specs the mission gets aborted. :o

Can we get back on topic here, and talk about Nat in tight leather riding gear?

I'm certain she has posted pics of herself in her leathers in the past. No if some kind soul would find them for us...

The ONLY reason that drivers get pissy with people splitting stationary lanes is pretty jealousy

Or, it might be that some motorcycles are air cooled and sitting in stop and go traffic for hours will cause them to overheat and cause physical damage.

If it were illegal, they'd be writing citations for it. Quitcherbitchin' and SIUCC. Get on 2 wheels and join the party, or have patience and wave as I go by.
Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

Just one thing to remind to the 'holier than you' cagers: you are not stuck in traffic, you ARE traffic. No reason to be mad at the time lost as you are as much responsible as all the other drivers around you.

Splitting lanes is legal in Belgium up to 50 kph, with a max 20 kph difference between 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers (this is a bit difficult to judge and enforce...). Police forces are very tolerant about 'creative' use of the road by the bikers as long as they ride at reasonable speeds and don't try to be noisier than a Saturn V taking off.

On the highway in the daily traffic jams, most people are respectful to the bike riders and leave them enough space to pass. When the traffic problem is unexpected (i.e. caused by an acccident during the WE), the rider should be much more careful because the drivers don't think about them. The same in cities.

Now, some riders are as intolerant as cagers by expecting everyone to pull aside to let them pass, and become mad when they are blocked. I will not honk nor made rude gestures at a car stuck between lanes during a change, and I even make 'thank you' gestures to drivers who required me to take action to avoid them then noticed me just a tad too late.

For me, riding a bike is a zen exercise.

Most cops were pretty awesome there. I was haulin ass around the Brussels ring once headed north when I got stuck behind a slow car in the fast lane. Noticed a couple bikes behind me that I couldn't tell if they were Gendarmerie or not so I pulled into the middle lane after passing the slow car. Sure enough they were. One made the slow down gesture as they passed and they were gone.

The three years I was there I didn't get any tickets till the last three months. Then I got two a month apart, both in my truck. They're still there waiting for me I suppose. :D

+1000

Personally, I go with the flow unless there is no flow... I don't ride 10 times faster (or slower) than traffic and I go by carefully when cars can't budge... In doing so, I take 99.9% of the risk so I tread with caution. To do otherwise is just plain stupid.

And btw, you will not find pictures of me in my leathers because I've never posted any (not here nor anywhere else on the web). ;)
