Nataly 38 #1 December 1, 2011 Lucky for me I am first one in the office 'cause I just burst into uncontrollable laughter!! So I was riding the bike to the office... Lots of traffic, as usual, and was filtering carefully, as usual... When this car pulled out without looking - as usual. I saw him in just enough time to react by breaking instead of swerving (which obviously would have been the better option) and tipped the bike about 1 inch from his car. When I got up, the guy got out of his car, helped me get the bike back up and looked at it in a very concerned manner: "is your bike ok???" (It is ok - broken indicator light and scratched mirror is the only minor damage... Apart from my bruised ego, that is!)"There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

Nataly 38 #3 December 1, 2011 Quote Glad you and bike are ok. Thanks I drive like a little old granny and look totally retarded with gear from head-to-toe, but at least it means if I do have an accident I probably won't be too mangled!! cocheese 0 #4 December 1, 2011 Glad you're ok. Keep wearing all the gear. I wiped out on a dirt road 4 days ago. Not a scratch on me, by I hyper extened my knee or something. I'm blaming the chain I tightened before the ride.

danornan 79 #7 December 1, 2011 Safest way to ride a bicycle is just like a motorcycle and that is to assume that people will pull out in front of you at all intersections. They see you, but they do not take action because of the time delay in seeing and recognizing. That is the reality of it and it's not going to change. Know that it's going to happen and pretend that you are invisible. It's the only safe way to ride a bike. I ride a motorcycle all the time, but have give up on the bicycle on public roads. Too many accidents and for me, it's just not worth the risk.Dano

It's obviously your call, and I don't live where you live, but, if you think one is more prone to accident then the other, I think you are fooling yourself. I put about as many miles on the motorbike as the bike each year (about 4 to 5000) and I'd say I'd have just as many close calls with either. And most of these miles are commuting (well, all of the motorbike's are, and about 1/2 the bike miles).Remster

I rarely ride without the proper gear and that includes a much better helmet, pants, gloves and jacket. On my bicycle, riding with traffic, I just feel too venerable and unaware of what is behind me. It's the law around here to ride with traffic, but that doesn't feel as safe. Could easily be perception though. I'm always open to learning and different opinions. I generally ride about 7-10,000 miles a year and have been very lucky to have never been in an accident. I have avoided quite a few though!Dano

You think being a salmon would make you safer??? Heh heh - salmon!! Here you are allowed to filter. Not only this but the guy was turning into the road (not at an intersection but pulling out of a driveway) so he did NOT have the right of way. Technically he is wholly at fault, but I could easily have avoided dropping the bike. I saw him well in advance and even honked - I just hesitated too much before I decided to hit the brakes rather than swerve... In hindsight, given he was turning left and across the road swerving would have almost certainly resulted in a collision. Meh... Live and learn. Malta_Dog 0 #14 December 1, 2011 Glad you're unhurt... Been there, done that (with a bit more damage to the bike, but not a scratch on me thanks to the gear). Now, when I'm splitting lanes or even riding through heavy traffic, I switch on my hi-beam and 4 blinkers. I won't get mad anymore at people who don't see me, I consider it my job to avoid everyone. That being said, people on the phone, reading the newspaper or putting make-up while driving still make my blood boil... All your dropzone are belong to us!!!!111!
