PhreeZone 20 #1 January 28, 2012 So I am sitting with enough frequent flyer miles to go anywhere in the world in business/first class we want for a vacation and we are bouncidng around some ideas but I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for great places to visitinI the middle of June or so. I am considering a trip to China, Japan, or even a few weeks in Europe but nothing is decided and we are wanting to consider all great options. So where would you go for a week or two if only hotel expenses and food needed to be considered?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

skymama 37 #3 January 28, 2012 My travel to other countries is limited to Europe, but I did travel there in June and the weather was quite lovely the whole 2 weeks we were there. We went to England, France and Spain. If you do go to England, make sure you're not traveling there during the Olympics, I'm sure that will be a nightmare! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

NWFlyer 2 #5 January 28, 2012 Are you limited to June because of your own schedules? I ask because I've found May and September to be some of the best times of the year to travel since you're just outside of the prime tourist seasons, but still have nice weather. Depending on where you're going you may have an easier time of it with reserving your tickets using miles. If you're talking this coming June, you may have already missed the boat on frequent flyer availability (unless you have enough points to buy the less restricted tickets). Japan these days is an interesting choice since tourism is way down after the earthquake/nuclear meltdown, and apparently things are still quite safe and reasonably recovered in much of the country. It might be a really great time to go and enjoy fewer people and some good deals. Here's what a grad school classmate of mine who lives in Tokyo recently said about living there "But life in Tokyo is far from the panic charged atmosphere the western press would like the world to believe. The actual threat to Tokyo is incredibly low so we decided to bring our entire family back and get on with things.... My parents have even joined us in Tokyo for the month to enjoy virtually no tourist crowds and tour southern and central Japan.""There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Muffie 0 #7 January 28, 2012 I really liked Croatia - I was Star Alliance and able to use miles for a flight to Dubrovnik and then able to use Hilton Honors points for free hotel once there. Based myself out of Dubrovnik, rented a car and drove around a bit, and took escorted tours into Bosnia and Montenegro because at the time I was told it wouldn’t be smart to drive a car with Croatian plates into either country. You may be well into tourist season, though. NZ’s great as well. If you’re Star Alliance then you can fly Air New Zealand. You’re getting into the colder season if you go in June, but June/July is actually one of my favorite times to be there. Just know that part of the day may be rainy. I also used miles for a trip to Thailand and then went to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat (or however that’s spelled. It was only about $150 to fly to Cambodia from Bangkok and a top notch five-star hotel was less than $100 a night in Cambodia). Haven’t done it yet, but I think my next miles-based trip is going to be Malta.

JerryBaumchen 1,468 #9 January 28, 2012 Hi Phree, Having travelled a fair amount internationally, I recommend that you try to go Business Class. It is very good treatment and (IMO) First Class is not worth the extra miles demanded. June is not a good time to try to use mileage miles though. PhreeZone 20 #10 January 28, 2012 I'm sitting on about 300k miles right now and it looks like this year will be another 125k-175k+ on account so I'm not overly worried about burning off the miles. I've flown 15,000 this year already by the time this weekend is over. I'm on the taller side so the leg room and the lay down seats are really appealing in the new 777's. I'm not really sitting on that many hotel points so I might only be able to get 1 or 2 free nights so that's not really too big of a concern. June - August is the only window due to schedules since my wife is a teacher and gets the summers off and taking other time off is not really possible. I had forgot about the Olympics in London this year, that eliminates England but makes the rest of Europe an option still. JerryBaumchen 1,468 #11 January 28, 2012 Hi Phree, Well, with that kind of mileage: Go For It. You should not have too much of a problem getting seats if you use the miles for First Class. Enjoy your trip, JerryBaumchen PS) I've got about 380k miles sitting in my account. I need to think about a trip somewhere.
wmw999 2,589 #12 January 29, 2012 Do you like eating, adventures, culture? Civilized places, or ones where everything assaults you? Isolated (e.g. Caribbean islands) or with people (e.g. Paris). Those can make a big difference. NZ was amazing, one of my favorite vacations. But it might be cold that time of year. North coast of Australia and scuba might be good temperatures, though. If you can take longer than a week and like hiking, it might be a good year to hike Kilimanjaro -- I believe that's a good time of year to do that, and who knows how much longer the snows will last (regardless of what you think about warming, Kilimanjaro snows are lessening). The airline might have deals where you can do all-inclusive vacations for miles. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
skymama 37 #13 January 30, 2012 QuoteI had forgot about the Olympics in London this year, that eliminates England but makes the rest of Europe an option still. Hmmm...I wonder if the hotel rates in other big cities in Europe will be good because they will want to compete with all the people going to England. Might be worth looking into. Here's a thought...both of you should write down your top 5 wish list destinations and then see if they match up. Top location for both of you wins! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
