WOuld you use paypal to sell an automobile?

Recommended Posts

Trying to sell the TrailBlazer. Got the following e-mail about 4 hours after we put it online.

thanks .the pictures are clearly seen and am satisfied and I fully understood the condition of what i am buying. Thanks for the prompt response.i'll like to know the following:

(1)how long have you had it?
(2) i will like to know the reason why you are selling it..
(3)hope i'll enjoy it?

Note that i'll be responsible for shipping and handling. I have decided to use the program "Buyer and Seller Protection" offered by PayPal Inc. I want only legit transactions! Giving the nature of this transaction please note that PayPal will protect us. If you are not aware of how they work you should know that they will give both of us proper protection. After payment is confirmed to you by PayPal, you'll receive terms and conditions that will protect both of us. Inspections will be done by the moving company as soon as payment is verified.

If you wish to proceed selling this to me, please provide me your full name, address (street, city, zip, state), phone number and your PayPal email address so I can initiate the deal through PayPal right away also so i can forward it to the shipping company to calculate the cost of pick up for me. i can only pay through PayPal. kindly get back to me with your paypal email address for payment as soon as possible and if you don't have an account with PayPal yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.com and get it set up.

Thanks and in anticipation of your response

Best Regards,

No. List it on craigslist and have people come to YOU with cash or verifiable "same as cash" for big sales. When I sold my big-ass fifth-wheel in FL, I carried it all the way across the state to the buyers bank so that they could pay me cash. I'm just not a fan of PayPal for large purchases

Did you try to sell it locally first? Craigslist is free, and you can repost it every day in a few minutes time to keep it on top of the list. It's local buyers, and you can get cash in hand, or meet them at the bank to make the transfer there. You get the title notarized and they withdraw the cash all at the same time. That's REAL protection.

Aside from the scammy-ness of the whole thing, keep in mind you're going to lose a chunk to ebay and a chunk to paypal with this deal. Paypal might also 'hold' the funds until three days after the car is delivered. I'd cancel the auction and avoid ebay or any deal where you have to ship the car.

Sure. I've sold other stuff for more money remitted via paypal than the last car I sold (probably for a personal check from someone I knew).

But your response is an obvious scam. A real person responding would probably refer to it as something other than "it", would ask more specific questions "how often did you change the oil? will that scratch buff out?" and make other non-generic comments "I can't wait to roller blade with my wife" and then there's the incongruity between what you're selling and shipping.

Most people don't open at full price, except when they perceive it to be a bargain and try to pay as soon as possible so no one else gets it so by itself the full price offer doesn't rule out an attempted scam.

Right. If you waste your time corresponding with the respondent you're likely to get something back like "I'm working on an oil platform and can't see it personally, but my agent will be by"
