20+ years jumping vs 3 months playing hockey

Recommended Posts

Because one successfully jumped from airplanes in flight numerous times over a period of years without breaking a bone does not mean that one will be as lucky when taking up a new activity.

Yes, we are only three months into hockey class and I broke my freaking leg at a stick time last weekend. Tib and fib.

At least the shin guard kept it all in line so I don't have to get cut open, but still. That hockey shit is dangerous!

I used to jump with a guy who was a skydiver on the weekends, and a softball player on the weekday evenings.
He finally had to give up the softball because he kept getting hurt and couldn't jump.

I have had so many hockey injuries over the years, I lost track of them all. There's been blood, lots of muscle injuries, separated shoulders, etc, etc, etc. Not only have I taken a goalie stick to the face which resulted in stitches, I also took a goalie skate to the face. Fortunately I was wearing a mask when I took the skate to the face, so no harm done. But I would be Frankenstein's bro these days had I not been wearing a mask that day. :o

Maybe you should take up roller derby:P

I as well got most of my serious sports injuries from hockey. Cut to face above my eye from a skate, really bad cut to the inside of my knee... never seen that much blood before :|
and I got knocked out after taking a huge hit. I was very confused for a day after that... stupid brain injuries.

Hope you heal up well and get back out there :)

Have you seen my pants?

LOL! I got a stick to the face in our first scrimmage, a guy broke his stick on the goalies face three weeks ago and last night the s/o got a skate to the face. We love our cages and we don't care how uncool they make us look. :D

My break wasn't from anything cool or sexy like a good hit or sliding into the boards. I got my feet mixed up underneath me when I fell.

I'll be back out there, probably before I really should be. The game is just too much fun!

Learning new stuff and meeting new people can be a lot of fun.:)
But the physical contact, those sharp instuments on your feet, those long sticks, hauling around all the gear and the potential for injury.B|

Hockey has got to be a hell of a lot of fun like some other "extreme" sports;)

Wear a mask/cage. It's one thing for the pros not to wear one (they get paid to do this stuff and there are doctors/dentists on call at the rink when the pros play). I was extremely luck when I was younger playing hockey with no facial protection. Twice I have taken a stick to the mouth and did not lose any teeth (but your lips sure do bleed a lot). When I took the goalie stick to the face I was lucky it hit my chin and not my mouth (you could see my chin bone before the doctor stitched me up) and I also took a stick once very close to my eye (more stitches). After all these close call I finally woke up, smartened up and put the mask on and had I not been wearing a mask when I took the goalie's skate to my face, I shutter to think what sort of damage would have been done.

There is nothing uncool about protecting our faces. ;)

Ouch.:S

4 missing teeth, 18 stiches, 3 seperated shoulders, two creaky knees and one really damaged liver from the "after game debriefs" in the locker rooms.

I still think we need to do a hockey boogie. A day of jumping and then a pick up game after. There are a LOT of jumping hockey players.B|

Heal up and get back out there!

ps...you really broke your leg stomping it on the ground watching your Sharks play. Didn't you!

Saw Keith that afternoon at the DZ and heard about it. . we couldn't believe it . .[:/] Bummer!

Hopefully your Sharks will get their act together and push the series to 7 so you can watch some hockey while your laid up.

On a side note, you should see the bruises my gf got on Sat from curling . . who knew this ice stuff was so sketch :P

Haven't had an issue with the ankles; my skates are pretty stiff. Pulled stuff in the groin several times when we started the class but haven't done that in over a month. Not sure if that's cuz I learned to stretch right or because I (was) getting stronger.

Eight and a half months after breaking, I got back on the ice. Yeah, the ortho said I should wait until at least late March, but fuck him, what does he know? Would have been a lot sooner if I'd gotten hardware like people who have insurance get. But anyway, been out four times and so far it's all good. Yay for bashing a puck around!

As soon as the ground temperatures begin to exceed 75F, I'll be putting my rig back on too. Ortho didn't say anything about not jumping and I did mention it - but I'm not sure he understood that by "skydiving" I don't mean doing a tandumb so I can mark it off a bucket list.

My advice to you - don't break yourself. Being broken sucks, and being almost better sucks even more.
