lawrocket 3 #1 August 23, 2005 Sure, it's been almost 20 years, but Diego Maradona admitted to handling the ball when he scored that goal in 1986 against England. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=ap-maradona-handofgod&prov=ap&type=lgns Apparently Maradona has cleaned up his life. This is probably something that he wants to talk about to rejuvenate his image, which I don't have a problem with. Of course, it also gets me to thinking about others who can come clean on what happened with their infamous moments. Will Frenchy Fuqua finally admit that the ball bounced off of him before Franco Harris caught in in the "Immaculate Reception?" Will Tom Brady fess up to not pulling in an attempted pass in the "Tuck Rule" game? My wife is hotter than your wife.

Rebecca 0 #3 August 23, 2005 All that talent, all that hard work, dedication, & sacrifice on the part of Argentina and England's teams rendered worthless in one fell cheap move. A professional sports star who cheats like that - i.e. deliberately - is no professional and certainly no star. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? masterrig 1 #4 August 23, 2005 To me, any professional athlete, who cheats, for any reason is noone to look up to! I don't care who they are or think they are... they should be banned from that sport... period! Chuck

masterblaster72 0 #8 August 23, 2005 Maradona was a rat for doing what he did. But there have been tons of other ripoffs in soccer that were never fessed up for (Italy v Korea 2002 for example), so give the guy credit. Bottom line when you're an athlete of that caliber is winning, and that came before being a sportsman for him (unlike Pelé, who was first and foremost a sportsman). Even without the cheat, Argentina still would have won that game because they were simply the superior team. Maradona's other goal in that game (item 3 on that page) proved it -- any team that lets an opponent run circles around it like that won't go far in a world cup. The man's cleaning up his act. He was wrong, but give him credit -- most athletes don't have this kind of courage. And no, I don't think we'll ever see a confession about the Immaculate Reception. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Rebecca 0 #11 August 23, 2005 OK, I'll give him credit. Good job, Maradona. And it only took you 20 years... If he had any pride in himself as an athlete and teammate, he would have spoken up right away. Like you said, they were the superior team, so they would've won anyway. Only difference is it would've been clean & honorable, and this thread wouldn't exist. He and every other athlete who accept a salary and then puposefully break the rules are a disgrace to the fans and especially the athletes who DO obey the rules of a fair game. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? How many professional sports do you watch? Rule stretching, bending, outright breaking are part of the game. You can't give your opponent an edge by playing between the lines - the difference between champ and chump isn't very wide in well established leagues. American football is full of dirty tricks, esp down in the pile. NBA basketball is worse. I don't see what Maradona gains - I think it was better left unsaid, and forever contested in the courtroom of Guiness. The more interesting bits of sports history are the plays where you're 95% sure he got away with murder than knowing it as actual fact.

Allegations of steroid use for a professional athlete, especially of LA's stature and especially with cycling are tantamount to allegations of pederasty - even if never proven, the suggestion (especially if repeated) can lead to constant suspicion that can never be fully shaken. Not to say that I blame the French. Honestly, if a French NASCAR team came in and dominated the chase, Americans would probably be upset, too. My wife is hotter than your wife.
