quade 4 #29 February 19, 2012 QuoteIt's like saying most people would rather go out and watch a professional sporting event than go play it themselves. Yet that is 100% and undeniably true because that is, in fact, what "most people" do. Forget what people say they'd rather do . . . it's what they actually do that makes the statement true.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
wmw999 2,583 #30 February 19, 2012 60 years ago, it was pretty hard to watch -- TV was very rare, and it wasn't any easier ot get to games then than it is now. Therefore, more people actually played, and were happy with their performance, because they judged it within their group. Just as women look at the impossibly airbrushed & perfect models and can't compete, athletes look at impossibly toned & practiced pros, and figure they suck if they can't play as well. adagen 0 #31 February 20, 2012 There are a lot of people out there who are superbly good at what they do but never hit the headlines. They may only be recognised within their own communities, but they're still doers. There's a legacy of beautifully made historical artifacts whose makers' names never reached the history books. There are people who put huge effort into making things happen, or just doing their own job extremely well. Often their names just don't get a mention. And of course there are people who take part in a whole range of sports even though they don't have the skill levels to reach the Olympics or be sponsored by Red Bull. There are lots of doers out there who don't get recognised.Anne

(not aimed at you Squeak, I know you understand what I'm saying) I agree Jim, and paying bills and punching a clock is what I also do. But it's still a choice to sit back and watch the world go by. At no stage am i talking about the elite end of any endeavour. I'm talking about getting up and doing SOMETHING what ever that thing is that makes you smile and move. I'm not rich or even independently wealthy. I work for a living and get paid a pretty crappy amount of money for what I do. But my life still rocks and it does so because of the choices I make. I see people providing evidence of the same all over the world, from those with silver spoons to those with dirt floors. But like i said in a previous thread, I do tend to view the world differently to a lot of people. My personal history, the work I do, the places I visit all show me what's accomplish-able in daily life and the difference it can make. You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! wolfriverjoe 1,523 #39 February 20, 2012 QuoteUh huh. Check back in after 50 and tell me what you've really accomplished in life. My guess is you didn't cure cancer. Nothing to do with you personally or anyone in particular, but society simply can't support everyone being the rock star with nobody in the audience. Sure, everybody can try to be their best and everybody can participate to a certain degree, but the vast majority have to be the audience and the reality is you wouldn't want it to be any other way. Just look at YouTube, probably the most accessible form ever invented, yet 99% of it is pure crap. Would a game of football be worth watching if the average person was playing? Is 99% of everything written by people worth reading? So, sure, live life the way you want to, but only a small percentage of anything is going to be worth watching, which relegates the vast majority of us to being the watchers rather than the rock stars. You seem to feel that if someone doesn't want to watch what I'm doing, then I have to be a "watcher." That if I don't accomplish something spectacular, then I must be relegated to the audience. Well, I haven't cured cancer, nor will I ever be dumb enough to try out for "American Idol" (I'm neither good enough nor bad enough to make it past the first intern kicking the majority of the contestants out). But I don't care about that. I don't ride my motorcycle to be seen. I'll never have the skills to race competitively. I do it because I prefer it to sitting on the couch watching motorcycle racing. The same goes for the other things I do. I do them because I enjoy doing them."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." JerryBaumchen 1,462 #49 February 22, 2012 Hi Paul, I'm curious how many TV shows and movies you've watched versus how many you've performed in? Never performed in a tv show or movie. But I've performed in a stage play. How many books you've read? So many I cannot begin to count them. How many NASCAR races? I've never watched a NASCAR race; don't care for it. I don't watch any car racing. How many Super Bowls? Probably have watched the last ~15 or so. How many stand up comedy performances? I've done one; for a rhubard performance for a guy who was retiring. So what have you done? Just to keep things on an even keel. JerryBaumchen PS) I'm still with Squeak; together we outnumber you.
