Which do you tighten first

Recommended Posts

I tighten my chest strap first because it is easier to forget it then the leg straps.

Thats the reason I do my chest strap first too. I put my leg straps on first, but I dont tighten them until I've done up the chest strap.

I learned to paraglide before skydiving. I never thought about the straps until you asked the question, but my routine is exactly the same now with the skydiving gear as I learned in paraglding... (old habits die hard.) Legs first...

In paraglidng, the legs you can unclip, not step into - so if you fly without legs you die. If you fly without the chest you most likely will live but hold on for the ride. So, legs on first, off last. I never go half way - it is all or none. Also, I find myself being real anal about making sure the legs are exactly even, because under a paraglider that can turn you on launch very easy. I suppose the same is very true on deployment under a canopy.

I've always done the leg straps first, however someone recently pointed out to me that I should do the chest first for the reason that it's easier to forget the chest strap, so now I am starting to do the chest strap first, but sometimes I still get the legs first..

I thread the chest strap before tightening the legstraps, but I don't tighten the chest strap until the first light comes on. I don't need it to be tight in the case of an emergency, and I am much more comfortable with it not.

I like tight leg straps to prevent an obvious pain causing incident.

As far as forgetting the chest strap....

Before I put on my gear I check:
aad
reserve card (1st time only - I currently rent gear)
reserve closing pin and seal
reserver cord for free movement
main closing pin and flap
Bridle routing
Reserve and cut away hadles ( including cut away lines for proper orientation)
legs including stiching and buckles
PC
chest, including stiching and buckles
3 rings
RSL

Before each jump I check:

legs
PC
chest
3 rings
RSL
goggles
helmet

Before I go to the door i check:

legs
PC
chest
3 rings
RSL
goggles
helmet

Overkill? Possibly, but I have no questions about my gear working. I only have to do things correctly. Yes mals happen. I want to prevent as many as possible

I would re-view that if I were you.

You should be in exit mode as soon as you are in the plane: straps tightened, both legs and chest. Your call, but you are asking for problems...

Last year when i was involved in an emergency aircraft exit. 2 of the guys in the 182 were NOT in exit mode and had to tighten their shit. Me and Michael were however ready to exit immediately. You are so right remi. You just never know when that will happen.

You bring up a great point with your comments. I noticed last year in the CASL that a lot of the teams adjust their leg straps while in the plane at around 11,000 feet. I'm not sure where that habit comes from.... But its one that I wish people would do without!

The chest strap is loose, but it is threaded. If load were applied to the chest strap, it would hold opening shock. I'll bring this up with my rigger this weekend, because you certainly have me questioning my belief. For reference, the difference between this untightened chest strap and how I tighten it for a RW jump (not too tight to ensure I can arch hard if needed) is approximately 4" of strap.

Chest Strap, because it sets the rig on my back where I want it to be. It's often recomended for smaller rigs.

I second that!!!!!!

If you jump a javelin Derek recommended to me that I tighten the chest strap first. I sometimes forget and have to loosed the leg straps and slide the rig up for a better fit. I'm not sure what it changes but the rig seems to sit higher on me if I do that first.
