Ale or Lager?

>Budweiser is also technically an ale...

What most people know as Budweiser (i.e. the beer sold by AB-Inbev, called Budweiser in stores) is fermented cold with a lager yeast. The BJCP categorizes it as a 1B, Standard American Lager.

although under the German Reinheitsgebot it isn't even considered beer because rice is not among the permitted ingredients (water, hops, and barley).

True. Of course, under Reinheitsgebot no modern beers (outside some lambics) are 'true' beers, since all use yeast cultures, and almost all use clarifiers, oxygen, yeast nutrient, external carbonation in the bright tanks, mash water adjustment etc. Only lambics inoculated via coolships, made without fruit or other adjuncts, AND bottle fermented via wort reinjection qualify to the letter.

>and stouts are originated from porters

Top 5 commercial stouts/porters:

Deliverance barrel aged imperial stout
Victory at Sea vanilla barrel aged imperial porter
Yeti Belgian Russian Stout
Obsidian Stout
Bourbon County Stout
Russian River porter

You left out Stone's Smoked Porter.. their original offering and still one of the best available...as close as you live to the brewery that is just criminal. ;)

Ahh, but those are Ales. I've got a nice oatmeal stout and a porter both homebrewed and in the bottle right now. Drop in for a glass. :)

YUM! next time through WA I'm on your doorstep.
