Which is REAL BEER?

Before you vote, please Google the difference if you don't know. :P

Since I'm having a Smitty's tonight, I'll say Ale.B|

Someone from the States asks a question about "real beer". Huhu.
As if "real beer" was made there :P:)
You wanna "real beer" go to:
- Germany
- Czech Republic
- Belgium
- England (OK, the temperature and some of what they call beer..., but...)

So I voted BOOBIES! :)

Oh, they make real beer here. Finding real ale (with live yeast in it pumped from its cask by hand instead of sprayed under pressure) is harder though.

Those guys seem to be afraid of flavor although the British deserve some credit for inventing styles that American microbreweries were able to improve on like the IPA.

Thanks for the answers so far. :)
Personally, I prefer ales (which doesn't mean anything beyond myself ;)). I like beers that are hoppier and less sweet, which in my neck of the woods means an ale rather than a European style beer (which are usually lagers).

I also would rather drink a local microbrew rather than a national brand (again an ale rather than a lager (Miller, Anheuser Busch, Coors).

But like virtually any other skydiver, I will drink what is plopped down in front of me :$:)

went to the local brew pub today because of this thread...gotta go with Ale.

However, Ale wasn't really considered a beer since it originally was brewed without hops...

Personally I prefer lager, especially if we're talking consumption...

Stout always makes me happy...there's something about it. I'll drink it once every 3 years or so, but damn, what a good time!

Ale. You can make good beer either way with either process - but there are more interesting ale yeasts out there, and more brewers make more interesting beers with top fermenting yeasts than with bottom.

And then, of course, there's steam beer.

Technically, a lager. IIRC

Lager yeast fermented warm like an ale. Definitely a "crossover" beer. Other beers in this general style are altbiers from Germany. "Altbier" means "ale beer" referring to the style - but once again they are generally made with lager yeasts.

There seems to be a general rule: Brands that are heavily advertised - quite often "national" beers - ought to cater for all kinds of taste and thus, end up as a characterless mishmash. Czech beers seem to be an exception, the original Pilsner (Pilzenski Prazdroj) for example or the original Budweiser (Budejovicky Budvar) are well-known but have a unique, sort of "strong", characteristic taste. And same applies to beers from Belgium - there are so many kinds each of them is quite nice. You can taste 5 of them a day (best place to do is Bruxelles) and if you stay a week, you are faaaaar from being done.
If you want to taste nice German beer, stay away from "Krombacher" or any other stuff available without effort in the US. Charlie Harper once drank "Radeberger", brewed in Radeberg near Dresden. That's a nice beer, Pilsner style. If ya wanna get a really strong one with a heavy flavour, ask for a Bockbier (strong lager)

But again: Who would vote beer over boobies? (Except from gay men and straight women?) :)B|:P

I brew both. Today I am brewing a Pilsner (a type of light lager). I have a freezer hooked through a thermostat so I can lager it at cool temperatures.

Generally, ales are fermented at near room temperature using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and have a more rich flavor. Lagers are usually fermented at cooler temperatures (for a longer time) using Saccharomyces carlsbergensis and have a more dry, crisp flavor.

ridiculous, there are an obscene number of US micro brews producing beer as good (or better in varieties never dreamed of previously) in the US in the last 10 years.. and I grew up in Germany.

stay away from the mainstream breweries (of any nationality) and your tastebuds will thank you immensely
