Katana 135

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know when PD is planning to release the 135 Katana. I have a 120 now and absolutely love it but somehow over the winter all my clothes have shrunk and somehow I think I would like to have a second canopy that is a little bigger.

Your guess is my guess. The answer I've been getting from PD for the past year is "it'll be released when its ready."

i talked to kolla the other day and told her my roomate "louddan" wanted to know when the katana 135 was coming out.

she said "when he's ready for it":D

Hmmmm, asking PD would probably be a start to getting a real answer.

You'd think that, but I have asked PD that very question, and they've never given anything even remotely resembling a real answer.

Now lets step back and think about that. IF a company said that their new fangled doo-hickey would be out by XXX while it was still in development and it didn't show or deliver by that date, you would now have a unhappy grumbling group of people out there. Or the manufacturer could release it before it's thouroughly tested just so it can make it's own deadline and have dissatisfied customers. When it comes to my life saving devices, I like to know that they have been thouroughly tested and are reliable.

I'm sure when PD is happy with the Katana in the larger sizes, they will release it along with an announcement letting everyone know.

PIA takes up a lot of peoples time and lots of cool stuff usually shows up down the road after PIA is over. Be patient, it will happen.

I want a 135 also. I just called and got a quote from a dealer for a 135 Katana (price was effective May 05), but he didn't know when it would be released.

I jump a 135 Sabre 2, but I don't really want to go to a Katana 120. I wish it would be soon.

The latest that I heard straight from a PD rep that I respect a LOT.:

They are VERY close.. but it needs some minor work still..

Be patient.. I'm sure we're going to see it soon.

I must admit I don't get the desire for a Katana 135. Why get an ultra high performance canopy then load the thing lightly? It's like getting a $300,000 Lamborghini and using it to tow a boat trailer at 55mph. (Or, more to the point, getting a Samurai 210 instead of a Pilot 210.)

Why ask why?

Seriously though. I want to change one platform at a time. I want to go to a fully eliptical canopy. I have jumped a Sabre 2 for quite a while and I like what I have read about the Katana. I want a more high performance wing. I plan on jumping the shit out of the Katana 135 and then going down fom there when I am ready.

What is with all the questions? Are you trying to get to something?

I'm looking for your reasons.

You say that you want to change planform, then size. That's great. I think it's a good idea. Here's the thing though, the Katana is a MUCH different wing than the Sabre 2.

Based on my experience witht he Katana, Id' say you'll need to be a very current jumper to fly it regularly. It's really on the order of a Velo. With your posted jump numbers, you may want to consider a 135 Stiletto in the mean time. Won't cost you much to find one used, and if you picked one up now by the time the 135 Katana comes out and has been on the market long enough to see the bugs are worked out, you'll have some jumps on an eliptical to give you a bit of life saving experience for the BIG jump to the Katana.

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Have you thought of giving the Stilletto a go while waiting for the Katana?

Wanting to change planform and not downsize at the same time is admirable, there is something between the Sabre2 and the Katana though which could be a reasonable interim step.

That is pretty good advice.

I always thought the Katana was closer to a Stiletto then a Velocity. I have jumped a Stiletto quite a bit before and it really didn't seem to different from my Sabre 2.

That is why I didn't think it would be a problem going to a Katana.

Anyway, I'm sure it will be a while until I could even get my hands on a Katana 135. Until then, I will stick to my Sabre 2 135 and continue to work on my technique.

Hmmmm....it's a long diving canopy, I'de put it inbetween, maybe a bit closer to the Katana. Harder opening than either, but less squirly opening than the Katana for sure.

Harder openings on a vengeance? My vast ;) experience of about 20 jumps on 3 different Vengeance 135/120 says the openings last up to about 1000ft. Loved the Vengeance, I want one but can't afford one. Makes a lovely camera canopy because of those slow openings... Although one of the 135 's I jumped and another 150 I saw have a tendency to turn to the left pretty quickly during opening, not funny if you have a camera helmet and makes the opening "harder" (feels like it anyway). The other 135, I'd even do birdman jumps with.

If you dont see much difference between a Sabre2 and a Stileto, might i suggest that it due to pilot error not due to any similarity in canopies, they are completly different and handle vry differently

I've got about 275 jumps on a Vengeance loaded at 1.3 and the openings were overall fair to good, but they were very inconsistant. i did a few jumps with a Shoe-Vue to try to debug the openings, and it just looks like with the airlocks the canopy doesn't want to inflate symmetrically. Whichever side inflates first will throw the canopy into a diving turn in either direction as soon as the slider is a little ways down the lines. After a while you develop a feel for it and you can keep it flying straight with quick riser input. Out of 275 jumps I had minor linetwists once or twice, and I had two absolute SLAMMERS with my camera helmet on.

I've got about 100 jumps on various Katanas (97-120) and I've noticed that the openings are in general a bit softer and considerably more on heading.
