Any other barefoot runners out there?

I've just started (after reading Born to Run) - Haven't don much - a couple of miles yesterday (in the meadow) and covered 7 today (running and walking) on tarmac.

I've bought some thin sole runners (plimsolls/daps) for running on dodgy surfaces and for winter but WONT EVER wear Vibram toes shoes (look gay and are putting more money into the shoe manufactures tills that they don't deserve!!) - also saw some 'Gloves' from Merrell and they're chuffing expensive too (£85!!! WTF?)- more corporate greed/band-waggoning!!

I'll let you know how I get on over the next few months....

The proper way to run, as opposed to the past 30 years of the clueless running shoe industry teaching a generation of people that heel-strikes are how to run.:S

I hope your arches survive, especially at <cough> your age. If God wanted people to run barefoot, She never would have invented Dr. Scholl's arch supports.

It might behoove you visit a podiatrist for a preventive/advisory consult. Some people with higher arches, or other conditions like excessive pronation or supination, don't do all that well without active support, especially once they hit middle age.

When my wife ran the Jerusalem marathon a few months back we bumped into a friend wearing those..."Run on your toes, breathe through your nose" was his mantra for the day.

He's STILL not walking right! :D

Bullshit.
I started running with track shoes with paper thin soles.
I never had shin splints until I started using the thick, mushy soles.
Since I've gone back to thin soles, I've had no further problem.

I've never had shin splints and always run on thick soles, I don't like real mushy footwear because they seem to lack stability which I notice over l o n g distances. B|

Nike 'invented' shin splints when they invented 'running' shoes :P

I can't help laugh when I see all of the 'Running shoe' companies making 'barefoot' shoes now [rolls eyes] and still charging big money for them as well:S

You get it right, and then you tell people to ignore you.
Your comment on Nike is more right on than you may imagine.
I once bought a new pair of Nikes, when I had been running daily. In two weeks I had shin splints even though nothing else had changed. Close examination revealed the inner side of the sole was getting lower than the outer side, causing even more extreme pronation. i.e. the soft mushy sole was taking on a wedge shape with the narrow edge of the wedge toward the inner side of the foot.

After running 3 marathons and a bunch of half marathons, I ended up with runner's knee.

After going through physical therapy twice without much success, I decided to try natural (not barefoot) running. The principle is the same as decribed in Born to Run. Land with your feet underneath your hips, on the ball of your foot, and let the heel tap the ground and bounce back up. The general idea is that the heel strike encouraged by the built-up running shoes is harmful, regardless of the amount of padding in the shoe. By running naturally, you take that harmful heel strike out of the equation. I run in the New Balance Trail Minimus, but there are many options for natural running footwear. I do not run barefoot because the trails I do most of my training on are crushed gravel, with sharp stones. No way am I running barefoot on that. Here's a good review of the New Balance compared with another similar shoe by Merrell.

If you decide to transition to natural running, do it slowly. I started the transition in June, and I'm up to 7 mile runs natural. If you do it too quickly, you run the risk of injury, particularly stress fractures in your feet, which are not used to the different stresses caused by natural running. You will also notice considerable soreness in your calfs in you do too much too soon. I plan to be 100% natural running by the start of the new year. There is lots of literature on the subject. I've done 3 marathons over 70 triathlons and an Ironman (more years ago than I will mention). Some of my graduate work was done in Exercise Physiology. IMHO five fingers are not for everyone. If everyone had perfect running form and foot plant, they would be great. I have super high arches and need orthotic inserts to correct my foot plant. If I ran in Five fingers I would have the worse case of Plantar fasciitis that would probably take 6 months to heal....but I have a friend that has done well over 30 Ultra-marathons in them and absolutely loves them.
