Question about 3 Ring Maintenance

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a re-thread, but I didnt find anything in my quick forum search which answered my question...

When you do 3 ring maintenance, I have heard many say that you need to lubricate your cutaway cables.. Any suggestions on what specific lubricant to use, and where I can buy some? Also if you could give a quick run down of specific things that should be checked / looked for during this maintenance that'd be great

Note, I'm not a rigger, I'm a gear geak, but eitherway I still don't have a rigger's ticket.

"Lubricate" is a strong word.

ACE silicon spray (food grade) is pretty widely used. Spray it on then wipe it clean. Then you're good to go.:)
If you leave any sort of "lubricant" on the cable, then it tends to attract dirt and such, which you really don't want in your cutaway system.;)

The Ace hardware store here doesn't have Ace brand spray, but they seem to have a good product by another name. Do you have some that is actually labeled food grade?

Nate, the important thing is to not use any oil based lubricant, and silicone is a great alternative.

You'll get a lot of info from the 44 results you'll get on a search for "silicone spray".

This may seem obvious, but it deserves mention... Make sure you use ACE silicon lubricant - NOT Ace silicon glue. The bottles are amazingly similar, and are often found side-by-side in the store.

Ace silicon glue on your cuttaway cables would be a bad thing...:S

MLW:
- Velcro clean and in good condition?
- Velcro stitching still in good condition?

Hard housings:
- Tacking still good at housing ends?
- End caps in place and not damaged?
- Run a cloth tab through them to clean out dirt.

Cutaway cables:
- Cleaned and lubricated?
- Free of nicks and scratches?
- Re-verify proper length as long as you're messing with them.
- Handle still secured nicely?
- Handle Velcro clean and in good condition?
- Cable ends smoothed over the metal core properly?

Risers:
- All junctions cleaned by massaging to get the dirt and stiffness out?
- Riser inspected overall for wear and damage?
- All stitching in place and not frayed?
- Ring loops inspected inside the loop for wear?
- Rings checked for burrs, distortion and cracks?
- cutaway cable guides secure (stitching and/or hard housing)?
- Cable loop in good condition and not frayed?
- Cable loop proper length?
