Slipping Racer Loop

Recommended Posts

I have a Power Racer in the loft that has a slipping reserve closing loop issue...bottom side loop only.

The loop is brand new (from Jump Shack). I installed it myself...have done numerous of these, and the bottom loop slipped more than 1" during shipping back to a customer.

There is no silicone on the loop and the loop is a Power Racer (smaller) loop with the small cap.

I've seen old Reflex loops slip before because the fingetrap was worn out, but I've never had this issue on a new Reflex or Tear Drop loop...or any Racer loops.

I've looked at the loop and it looks perfect. I'm obviously going to contact Jump Shack tomorrow (if they are open) to see what they think.

Just wondering if there is something I've missed...or if anyone has had a similar issue...or if this was just a fluke incident...maybe something weird happened during shipping?

I'll be inspecting/repacking and trying againg tomorrow morning. Thanks for any insight or help.

According to the Cypres Manuak, new loops can be expected to stretch up to 3 mm.

I think pre-stretched loops won't stretch. I mean how much can a 2-5 inch Spectra loop stretch? Take a piece of closing loop material and see if it stretches. It doesn't. The 'stretching' is the pack job settling and the knot slipping.

I'm going to spend some time doing some experiments and testing these numbers - I'll get back to this thread within 48 hours and let you know what I find...
I like experiments - I never really grew out of little Science Projects...:)

Mike,

Tried to reach you at both of your telephone numbers but your answering machine picked up. I will call you tomorrow. Was this a 4" or 6" hat?

Hey NightJumper...I guess I had my cell phone in another room.

It is a 4" hat. The measurement from stitch to stitch on the quick loop type IV is 3.5" with the center stitch at 1.75".

Please do give me a call tomorrow...or let me know the best way to reach. you. I'll be in the loft from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thank you,
Mike

"Lines made of Dynema ® will stretch only 1.5-3% under tension."

I found this while researching Spectra (Dynema). 3% of 8.5 mm (a common closing loop length measured from knot to the end of the loop), is 2.55 mm. So there's the 3 mm. I think pre-stretching the loops and dressing the knot will keep any stretching down toa minimum. I also wonder how much force is required to stretch a closing loops to the full 3% ? I doubt a reserve PC spring has the force required to stretch it the full 3%.

Of course, the stretching conversation is off topic since the concern here is the loop slipping, not stretching.

Derek,

I think you mean 0.255 mm.

And I agree, what appears to be stretch in the loop is the pack job settling. It I have time, I will leave the temp pin in and put two 25 pound shot bags on the rig for a couple of days and then reset the loop.

2.55 mm is correct, a normal loop length is 85 mm or 8.5 cm.

Derek did not say 8.5 cm, he said 8.5 mm. 3% of 8.5 mm is .255 mm.

I don't think in mm or cm, to me it would be just over 3 3/8 inches.:P

Yep, you are right, I meant 85 mm and 2.55 mm. I keep track of closing loop lengths in mm because it is easier to write than 2 and 3 /32th inches. It is also easier to add a few mm or subtract a few mm than a 1/16th or whatever.
