XF2 question

Recommended Posts

Hi.
i'm considering a XF2 149/139 (or a Stiletto 150) as my next canopy, but i have a few questions...

i've heard you have to load it ~1.7 in order to get maximum performance out of it, but its not the time for me to jump 1.7 wingloading just yet.
my question is, how well would it fly in a ~1.3 wingloading?
to be more specific, would it cause any risk to under-load it?

i'm trying to get one to demo but there arent many here (and the few i've found where to small...)
thanks

Based on previous posts on similar issues, I think some of the answers you could expect are:
* loading a canopy like that to 1.3 lbs / sf won't make the canopy fly more dangerously than loading it higher.
* jumping a 150 sf eliptical canopy at 1.3 lbs / sf at 280 jumps' experience has many risk factors other than the wing loading.
* at 280 jumps' experience and a desired wing loading of ~1.3 lbs / sf, an XF2 or Stilleto may not be necessary to provide the fun and performance you desire in flight. A semi-eliptical (i.e. tapered rectangular) canopy could fly just as well. Or, if it does not actually have as large a performance envelope, it almost does and it will not try as hard to hook you in when you make a minor mistake, and it won't try as hard to spin up on opening.

I don't personally have enough experience to say any of these things myself. This is just a subjective, opinion digest of what I seem to recall reading on these forums before.

This is just my personal opinion but I would not under load any canopy with a partially formed nose such as the Crossfire. I would believe they a\have a minimum loading in part to pressurize the nose.
Once again this is just my opinion and that is all

I flew a crossfire 2 108 at 1.2 and had absolutely no problems with openings or pressurizing. Now preformance of course was quite tame, but I was looking for good flare with soft landings which it gave me rather than hot fast swoops.:)

A friend flew my Crossfire 2 130 at 1.3 to one and got some really incredible swoops from it. As stated above this is just my opinion the Crossfire is one of the most formed noses out in standard 9 cells and if the company that makes them puts a minimum wingloading on them I personally would not under load one.

First Off Most Important Factor:

YOU ONLY HAVE 280 JUMPS.

You should not fly an ellipticale yet. Get more experience. Wait til you have 500 jumps at least! And you should be current. Crossfire2's are the MOST HIGH PERFORMANCE elliptical. Crossfire2's are the most high performance canopy before going to crossbraced. You don't want to mess with that power with only 280 jumps. Don't do it! It is not worth the risk!!!

And even if you could land it safelty 100 times. What about the malfuntions? When a crossfire2 has line twists, because it IS elliptical it will burn up altitude like you wouldn't believe!!! Sometimes in-experienced people don't even realize the alitude they are burning and ride that shit into the ground. It aint' worth it. STAY ALIVE. STAY ALIVE!!!
