My new bike

I've been riding a mountain bike(Trek 6300) for past 3 years or so. I've been thinking about buying a proper road bike since I mostly ride on paved roads. So finally this week I dragged myself to check out some bikes. After some trials I settled on buying a Cannondale Supersix 3 Ultegra and with some luck the vendor made it fully Ultegra (rims and hubs are not originally Ultegra) without raising the price.

I was a bit bummed out this morning when I woke up and realized it was raining and I may not be able to take the new bike for a ride. Luckily the rain calmed down a little towards the end of the day when I finally got the bike. All I can say is that its the best bike I've ever owned, hands down. It is insane how smoothly it rides, it almost just glides on the road. After I got home from a quick spin (40 km) in a light drizzle, all I could think about when I could ride it again. Going to be a long day at work tomorrow just waiting until I get home and get riding again.

Sweet bike! The Supersix is a pretty nice machine!

I see you have FSA SLK cranks: careful with those... I had the same with my Tarmac Pro, and they have a tendency to loosen on their own... Plus, after 3 years on a new set (that I had changed under warranty after less than 1 year when they came apart on a ride) the lug that's set in the carbon where the pedals attach came loose on mine... So I had to swap the crank for a new one (I went with Ultegra too).

I don't mean to bring you down, just make you aware of what to watch! Coz it is a sweet ride! :)
Mine, prior to a swap of saddle, the new crank (that was just done last month) and the original wheelset.

Super nice! You'd have noticed a big difference going from a decent alu road bike to a Supersix, from an MTB will be night and day! Ultegra is almost certainly the best performance/price groupset out there too, especially as specced on a complete bike. Pretty much the only thing you give away to DA is a bit of weight.

I've just retired my venerable Cannondale Six13 to winter duty and got myself this little beauty for the good rides (low res pic, but at least it hides the dirt:P). The 'dale served me well but this is something else:)

I did actually think about doing that this morning a lot. But unfortunately its only a 5 km trip to work for me so I probably would've ended up either driving through some weird route or just driving laps around the building so I figured its better to wait until I get to really ride it after work.

I noticed both of your bikes (Remster /jakee) the top tube on the frame is curved to kind of make it look like its one continuous tube down back. Do you know if its purely for aesthetic reasons or does it make the frame stronger/stiffer?

Yes. :D

Seriously, no knowledgeable idea... But, if I was going to guess, i would say its more optimized for vibration damping. I based this WAG on thee fact that the new Trek's are pushing that even more with their new Domane, where the seat tube is actually completely separate from the top tube and seat stays, to isolate the rider.

This being said, I like it coz it looks fast (as opposed to me being fast! lol)

My sensible side almost had me going with Chorus, but I ended getting Record (with a touch of SR) because the logos have a red '11' instead of all grey! Money well spent:S:D

How does the frame ride?

Best frame I have ever ridden bar none. Recent comparisons have included BMC SLR, Moots, Colnago Master and Pinarello Dogma, and my other bike which is a cervelo R3. (I'm lucky enough to have some friends in the industry)
Those are all amazing, but I am spoilt by the pegoretti now. Its a touch heavier than the latest carbon but it doesn't matter.

How's the stiffness of the back end of it? I was surprised at the weight of that frame! 1300g isn't that much more than a mid range Carbon... With my fat ass (and fat thighs) pressing on the pedals, I'm not sure how a light steel frame would react tho...

Awesome. Sounds like we've both done pretty well! The Zero.7 is all round the best frame I've ever ridden, especially for climbing and attacking - and this year I've been able to compare to a Cervelo R5Ca, Colnago C59 and a Dogma among others. The California was thereabouts in pure performance but the Wilier is just so much more fun!

Never tried a top notch steel frame yet, although a friend is building up a Master so I'll have to try and blag a ride:)

Much MUCH stiffer than I expected, and my mechanic and good friend (you should have a read of his blog at www.oli.co.nz - I reckon you would like it) was pretty surprised too. I'm on the thick end of 200 lbs and its not noodly in the slightest. It doesn't sprint quite as well as the R3, but everywhere else, its magic.

N.B. I reckon one of the main things I learnt from this bike, a good pair of handbuilt wheels trumps factory builts every time in terms of handling. Mine are open pros on Record hubs.

Oh and you think I suck now? A mate is a distributor for parlee, moots and indy fab B|

I've been riding the same Litespeed and wheels for the past 16 years or so.

July 2012 after many right shifter rebuilds another discontinued spring failed from fatigue and I didn't have a spare, my rear derailleur was worn out, chain had 5000 miles on it, and cable housings needed replacement so I upgraded to 10 cogs with NOS 2010 Centaur Carbon ultrashift levers and lightly used Record Titanium derailleurs.

I also switched back to a triple crank so I can keep my tight cassette without cutting back on the beer and pizza, giving up hills, or living with the ADHD shifting that went with the compact.

I built the wheels with Reflex clinchers (now Open Pros after the first front replacement and second rear) laced to 32 hole Chorus hubs (last of the C-Record forgings and with grease ports) with DT 2.0/1.5 Revolutions front and non-drive side and 2.0/1.8 Competitions drive side. They stay true until a rim gets bent on an obstacle or gets removed for replacement. I replaced the freehubs on those and my winter wheels with 9 speed Record titanium parts after Campagnolo discontinued my favorite 8 speed cassette (the 13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21) and I wore out my last one.
